Steward Machine Co Inc Welders (1st and 2nd Shifts, M-F some Saturdays as needed) in Birmingham, Alabama

The Company possess extensive lifting capacity and some of the largest CNC machinery in the world housed in more than 290,000 square feet of manufacturing space. They offer complete turnkey responsibilities by detailing shop drawings, fabricating, welding, stress relieving, machining, gear cutting and assembly in-house.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The welder will perform submerged arc and 3G flux core steel plate welding and heavy fabrication in a job shop environment for movable bridges hydropower, locks and dams and other industries.

Essential Functions / Duties

  • Perform submerged arc and 3G flux core steel plate welding
  • Keeps work area clean and orderly
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks
  • Understand safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety.
  • Reports the malfunction of equipment to proper authority.
  • Read blueprints, sketches, and follows verbal instructions.

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Prior bridgework and overhead crane operation
  • Structural steel or fabrication welding experience
  • Self-starter with good customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor, with the ability to maintain a good working relationship with management and co-workers
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must possess openness to learning new skills and collaborating with other team members to create solutions
  • Be able to pass fracture critical inspections and good understanding of welding symbols

Preferred

  • Prior bridgework and overhead crane operation

Education requirements or equivalent experience:

  • 5 years of welding experience

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, and smell. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
