Jacobs Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT) - Traverse City, MI in Bingham Farms, Michigan

As a Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT) based in Traverse City, MI you’ll join a collaborative team ensuring that our clients can deliver their services - uninterrupted. Under supervision, you will perform a variety of tasks associated with learning the associated responsibilities of a certified water/wastewater operator - in preparation for receiving an entry-level certification.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control, starts and stops pumps, engines and generators, by-pass pumps to control and adjust flow and treatment processes

  • Collects township and process samples as assigned; enters into chain of custody and utilizes sample tracking tool for all samples collected

  • Delivers samples to contract labs as assigned

  • Performs process control sampling and analyses

  • Maintains records for daily operations of facilities in daily log and on daily plant check sheets

  • Completes tasks detailed on daily check sheets. Observes general operating conditions, and reports issues immediately to supervisor

  • Assists with biosolids hauls to ensure proper loading procedures are used, records and samples are collected, and informs supervisor of any issues related to biosolids haul

  • Performs other duties as required

  • Cleans vehicles, heavy equipment, bar screens, comminutors, weirs, digesters, pumps, tools, and other stationary and portable equipment

  • Operates and maintains vehicles including forklift

  • Performs routine inspection of vehicles and equipment; preventive and corrective maintenance tasks as assigned and assist maintenance staff with larger corrective maintenance tasks as assigned

  • Fluent with writing work orders, entering work order data and completing work orders in maintenance management system. Uses Maintenance Management system to accurately reflect/record daily maintenance activities

  • Maintains grounds and buildings: snow removal including snow blowing walkways, cuts grass, painting of buildings and equipment, weeds, and brush; trims trees and bushes; rakes grass, leaves and trash; seeds and cares for lawns and ornamental plantings

  • Able to obtain certification and display competencies in forklift operation.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Possess a valid driver’s license

  • Knowledge of sound safety principles and practices

  • Knowledgeable in computer operations—able to make spreadsheets and word processing documents, and enter information into maintenance management system

Ideally, here’s what you will also have:

  • Basic knowledge in the operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, pumps and equipment used in and around water and wastewater systems

  • Familiarity with hand and power tools and equipment commonly used in the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, structures, and buildings

  • Possession of a class D wastewater treatment license or ability to obtain within 2 years.

The work areas may be indoor, outdoor, have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.
