SCL Health Surgical Assistant in Billings, Montana

Job Description:

This position transports patients to and from the O.R., handles routine tasks related to patient care, organizes equipment, and provides general cleaning of surgical suites.

Posting Specifics

  • Pay Range: $16.24 - $21.92/hour (depending on experience). The position includes a weekend contract, which is eligible for an additional pay differential.

  • Shift Details: Part-time, 24 hours/week. Weekend shifts. Saturday & Sunday, 7 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

ScopeAs a Surgical Team Assistant you know that every day is different, which is why you need to know how to:

  • Adapt to quickly changing dynamic situations calmly and effectively

  • Identify and prepare surgical and anesthesia instruments along with equipment and supplies for invasive procedures and vaginal deliveries- Assist with prompt case turnovers
  • Management of equipment and supplies
  • Maintaining a clean and organized OR environment


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current BLS certification endorsed by the American Heart Association
  • Prior CNA experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to complete call and weekend shift requirements as needed, as well as providing for emergency staffing according to policy

Job Summary:

Performs routine and specialized functions relating to support for Anesthesia, Operating Room, and Perioperative services under the supervision of an Anesthesiologist and RN.

Anesthesia duties

  • Consults with Anesthesiologist to determine needs for following cases.
  • Partners with Anesthesia and CS's to anticipate special needs of each anesthesiologist. Responds immediately to requests from the anesthesiologists during cases.
  • Assists the anesthesiologists as needed, especially during emergencies, difficult intubations, and traumas.
  • Assists under direction of MDA of management of airway maintenance. Retrieves medication under direction of Licensed Independent Personnel.
  • Float to other departments to support Anesthesia.
  • Cleans, checks, restocks, prepares, and maintains all anesthesia equipment and supplies for each surgical case.
  • Restocks supplies in anesthesia machines and anesthesia workstations. Ensures anesthesia machines are in surgical and procedural suites. Add specialty equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Change anesthesia filter, gas cylinders and canisters.
  • Set up Fluid Warmer, Invasive Lines and sterile supplies for Anesthesia procedures as requested and/or as appropriate for the type of anesthetic procedure to be performed.
  • Performs safety checks on anesthesia equipment and assists in troubleshooting of equipment.Works closely with Biomed tech to resolve issues with equipment.

OR duties

  • Assists with transporting patients into the OR suite, assisting with lifting, positioning, and/or transferring patients as indicated.
  • Assist in opening sterile supplies under the supervision of a RN and Surgical Tech.
  • Consults with the RN as appropriate to determine the equipment, set-up, and supply requirements prior to the start of a procedure.
  • Assist with timely turnover of rooms to include cleaning room, cleaning and removing specialty equipment.
  • Connects OR electrical equipment prior to surgical procedures and disconnects at completion of cases.
  • Collaborates with the RN and assists with documenting the use of equipment and supply consumption for accurate charging and inventory management.
  • Transporting Blood products and specimens to and from blood bank to OR and lab/pathology.
  • Maintains traffic patterns and adheres to sanitation policies and procedures for Surgical and Anesthesia instruments and equipment.
  • Reviews surgery schedule daily to anticipate anesthesia needs for equipment in OR, L&D, Cath Lab, GI, and Radiology.
  • Assists in general cleanup in Surgical area outside of OR suites.
  • Retracts and closes during surgery under supervision of the Surgeon and Surgery Tech.

Surg Plus duties

  • Confirms special beds/open rooms needed for starts.
  • Clean and make up patient carts.
  • PAT - log in to Ahi to check for labs.
  • Clean patient rooms after discharge.
  • Answer call lights.
  • Stock each pod area.
  • Deliver patient belongings to inpatient room.
  • Perform Surgical/Procedural patient preps.
  • Perform Phlebotomy. Perform EKG's.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
