Amazon Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Operations Technician (Shift) in Berlin, Germany

Description

Amazon is looking for an energetic, detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team in Berlin. The successful candidate will oversee the operation and maintenance of the electrical and mechanical infrastructure for Data Centers (DC) in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud regions. Our technicians are operating and maintaining AWS DCs’ world-class mechanical and electrical infrastructure. In addition to technical operations and maintenance, the successful candidate will oversee facility operations and ensure the implementation of safety procedures.

The role requires a motivated, self-managed individual who demonstrates initiative and proactively seeks solutions to problems while striving for operational excellence. The work follows a process-oriented approach: the individual needs a strong willingness to learn new processes and adapt to rapidly changing operational scenarios with conflicting priorities.

The successful candidate will be part of the Engineering and Facilities team and will be responsible for: maintaining availability for customers; ensuring maintenance and operation of technical infrastructure; upkeep and operate the DC facility.

Key job responsibilities

• SAFETY

Follow and maintain the highest safety standards and diligently encourage a world-class safety culture. As a facility owner team, ensure remediation of safety risks/issues in conjunction with other teams. Own the safety initiatives and projects to foster strong safety culture.

• ENGINEERING & FACILITY OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

Operational experience and familiarity with electrical and mechanical equipment, including Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS’s), Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS's), Diesel Generators, Chillers, Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), Exhaust Fans, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's), and Transformers.

o Troubleshoot events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA’s)

o Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment through routine rounds/log-taking (temperatures, voltages, currents, etc.)

o Supervise contractor or Engineering Operations Technicians to ensure proper operation and maintenance of all facility equipment

o Driving continuous improvement efforts on infrastructure through standardization of procedures and policies, while delivering performance against agreed metrics

o Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and assist in

recruiting efforts

Lead the root cause analysis for operational issues, and conduct meetings with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to finalize mitigation strategies

• Manual handling and lifting of equipment may be required (weight limits in accordance with regulations)

• Ability to work shifts (morning, late and night)

• On-call rotation reaction to off-duty emergency calls

Basic Qualifications

• Completed apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician/Electrician or equivalent recognized training

• Very good command of English

• Proficient with Microsoft Office products (e.g., Excel, Word) and web-based operational tools

• Proficient with Change Management Systems (CMS) and Ticket Systems

• Broad operational knowledge and experience with and familiarity with electrical and mechanical equipment

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive Data Center engineering experience or Job-related experience

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline

• Familiar with Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) control systems and data collection/trending

• Highly proficient in written and spoken English

• Very good command of German
