Optum AI is chartered to drive value on high impact enterprise AI problems, democratize AI through the enterprise ML platform, accelerate the adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) and drive Responsible AI. Projecting to deliver $8.4B of benefit value over the next 5 years through these efforts as well as reduce risk through safe, accurate, and unbiased AI, this is a key focus of the enterprise.

As an individual contributor, the Senior AI/ML Engineer, you will contribute to driving the research and development of innovative techniques to enhance the performance of NLP, NLU and NLG technologies as well as LLMs. Additionally, you will develop AI/ML metrics to measure Responsible Use AI (RUAI) dimensions in Gen AI architectures, LLMs and traditional ML models.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing models and methods that extend and improve LLM capabilities and reliability

  • Research, design and implement scalable machine learning models and RAG architectures

  • Developing new solutions and science best practices in Responsible AI

  • Developing our research and innovation agenda

  • Defining the strategies, priorities, and metrics for technical progress in RAG and LLMs

  • Collaborating with the Optum AI team and fellow scientist and engineers

  • Driving adoption of new science and best practices among service teams

Required Qualifications:

  • Master degree in computer science, Machine Learning, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or another STEM discipline

  • 5+ years of experience using ML to solve problems in natural language processing (NLP), computer vision (CV), computer speech (ASR), and/or other AI domains

  • 3+ years of DL frameworks such as PyTorch and/or TensorFlow

  • 3+ years of developing machine learning applications

  • 3+ years of experience in developing Responsible AI metrics, best practices, and/or solutions

  • 3+ years of solid ML and RL research and development experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Machine Learning with focus on NLP and/or GenAI

  • Experience with Advanced Deep Learning, applied math and statistics

  • Experience fine-tuning LLMs and/or improving pre-train LLM’s performance

  • Solid technical and scientific knowledge about generative AI

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $88,000 to $173,200 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
