Amazon Industrial Designer, Operations Engineering in Bellevue, Washington

Description

Solutions Design Engineering is part of the Global Engineering & Security Services (GESS) team. The Solutions team is made of the Concept Engineering (CANES – Concept Applications ‘N Estimating Solutions) and Firm Engineering (FIRE - Firm Engineering for initiatives, Retrofits and Emerging Countries). We are responsible for contracting potential MHE retrofit projects with MHE vendors and providing engineered solutions to Operations Engineering for installation. We work closely with many internal and external teams to develop MHE solutions, which allows us to deliver a variety of solutions. Our internal stakeholders include: Operations, WW Engineering, Finance, Safety, ACES, RME, and Operations Engineering. The concept team has following ownership

• Develop the concept design while understanding and translating business requirements.

• Work with TPM partners to determine business need by dates and deliverables.

• Owns the RFC and RFP process to determine vendor scope and ensure application of Amazon standards and spec.

• Review vendor proposals and make selection based on various factors.

Design Skills:

• Design and develop engineering solutions for complex material handling and storage challenges considering human/equipment interactions for the NA and Emerging Countries.

• Lead and coordinate concept and firm design development efforts for optimal solutions for the NA and Emerging Countries fulfillment network through equipment specification, material flow, process design, ergonomics, associate experience, operational considerations and site layout

• Work with various teams (PMO, Simulation, ACES, Operations, Finance, Ops Eng) to identify network problem statements and execute pilot projects that can be made network standards

• Lead the firm engineering process for various design reviews. Ensure the solution being developed meets or exceeds all Amazon standards.

• Writing or reviewing design / functional specifications, design verification plans and test procedures for MHE equipment.

• Driving projects to closure; ensuring that systems deployed, maintained, and meet regulatory requirements for certification

Project Management:

• Simultaneously manage multiple projects and tasks while effectively influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors and vendors.

• Work with procurement and PMO to obtain initial ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) pricing. Use this information along with other cost information to develop a CAR (Capital Asset Request) form. Ensure the funding for projects is effectively spent while ensure frugality is observed.

• Must remain as the primary POC for all design, schedule, cost and safety related question throughout the life cycle of the project. Work effectively with operations and Ops Eng to address any schedule changes during execution.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Design, or related field

• 4 – 6 years experience in a design related role

• Ability to understand and validate design changes requested or proposed.

• Ability to understand full system development life cycle, working within broadly defined parameters, including test plan execution and solution quality needs.

• Design-in-Safety experience

• Experience with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. Similar design experience in other industries can be considered.

• Able to communicate ideas effectively to achieve the right outcome for team and customer. Seek diverse perspectives, listen to feedback, and are willing to change direction if it creates a better outcome. Harmonize discordant views and lead the resolution of contentious issues (build consensus).

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree in Engineering, Design, or related field

6 – 8 years experience in a design related role

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $79,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
