Department Summary:

The Resilient Communications Department (N152) is seeking talented software and networking engineers with an interest in communications to join our diverse team of engineers working on DoD communications challenges for both the US military and its international partners across all domains (underwater, surface/ground, air, and space).

The Resilient Communications Department focuses on creating and fielding adaptive communications and networking infrastructures to successfully execute different missions in contested environments. DoD communications needs pose unique challenges to operate globally in dynamic or denied environments including the effects of electronic warfare.

The department’s work areas include RF communications, networking, modeling and simulation, system integrations, systems engineering, and software programming.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work on a collaborative team.

  • Selecting, configuring and testing network hardware including computers, firewalls, routers, switches and wireless devices.

  • Performing trade studies, modeling, emulating and testing network equipment and network topologies. Parameters of interest can include capacity, loss, latency and jitter.

  • Leveraging and building upon existing network modeling and test capabilities to analyze networks.

  • Deploying and debugging networks at field experiments.

  • Experience using wireless network models and network control services for a variety of protocols and devices

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, or similar field with less than 1 year of related experience, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate across multiple organizations and engineering disciplines

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret or Top Secret security clearance

  • Eagerness to learn new skills and technologies

  • Experienced with software development in teams using version control. Experience in a programming language like C/C++, Java, or Python, or other object-oriented software programming language.

  • Understanding of networks, especially layers 1-4 and 7 of the OSI model.

  • Working knowledge of protocols including

  • Ethernet

  • IP (Addressing, Subnets, Routing tables, Public/private/other IP ranges, CIDR), Unicast, Multicast, Broadcast, Static IP/DHCP

  • TCP/UDP

  • HTTP

  • SSH

  • Introductory experience with command line linux

  • Introductory experience configuring / debugging networking from the command line and using tools like ping, traceroute and nslookup/dig.

  • Exposure to computer emulation, virtualization or containerization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with network performance testing (including iperf or mgen) and one or more network modeling and simulation tools (EXata, QualNet, EMANE, CORE, NS3, OMNet++, etc.)

  • Hands-on experience configuring and debugging medium-scale networks (10s-100s devices, multiple switches, Wi-Fi APs, bridges etc)

  • Understanding details of protocols including

  • Ethernet/Wi-FI

  • MTU

  • Switching vs Hubs / Broadcast Domains

  • Medium Access Protocols

  • FDMA/TDMA/CDMA

  • CSMA, CSMA/CA, CSMA/CD

  • Security (802.1x, WPA)

  • Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

  • VLAN

  • Routing

  • NAT and Port Forwarding

  • DNS

  • OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, BGP

  • Firewall Configuration

  • IPv6

  • IPSec

  • Familiar with / aware of common network-based applications/protocols including SSL/TLS, NTP, RTP/RTSP, SIP, SNMP, LLDP, DLEP

  • Familiar with VPN and Client/Server vs Site-to-Site topologies

  • Exposure to with Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy and 802.15.4

  • Exposure to software defined networking (SDN), next generation firewalls and other current and upcoming concepts.

  • Exposure to mobile ad hoc network concepts and protocols (OLSR, OSPF-MDR, AODV, DSR)

  • Familiar with Quality of Service (QoS) concepts, Traffic Scheduling (WFQ) and Traffic Shaping

  • Experience writing network applications (sockets, datagrams, data serialization/encoding, endianness, multithreading, asynchronous I/O)

  • Familiar with language-independent data messaging standards such as XML, JSON and Protobuf

  • Experienced with software design paradigms such as Publish/Subscribe, Request/Reply
