Position Summary:

Administers aerosol therapy, chest physical therapy and oximetry evaluations to non-critical

patients. Performs Basic Life Support activities. Teaches and demonstrates respiratory care

activities to patients and their representatives. Cleans, assembles, sets up and maintain equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Cleans, assembles, sets up and maintains equipment and supplies as necessary for the operation of the department.

  2. Documents and maintains patient and department records according to established procedure.

  3. Provided the student has completed course work in pharmacology and completed clinical training in the following modalities he or she may under the direction of a licensed therapist:

  4. Administer prescribed oxygen and humidity therapy.

  5. Perform oximetry evaluations.

  6. Assist in providing Basic Life Support activities.

  7. Instruct patients in the proper use of a volume oriented incentive spirometer.

  8. Administer medicated aerosol therapy to non-critical patients.

  9. Administer chest physiotherapy to non-critical patients.

  10. Provide the re-assessment of patient’s response to therapy with the review and co-signature of a registered or certified therapist.

  11. After completion of three clinical semesters from an accredited Respiratory Care Program the student may provide the re-assessment without co-signature of the registered or certified therapist.

  12. After completion of three clinical semesters from an accredited Respiratory Care Program and the completion of a competency check off, the student may provide CPAP/BIPAP therapy to non-critical patients.

Participates in performance improvement activities

  1. Provides for the age-specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Current enrollment in an accredited RespiratoryCare Program

  • CPR issued by American Heart Association or RedCross Certification
