Located on the banks of the Mississippi river in southeastern Louisiana, Baton Rouge is the state capital with more than 800,000 residents (the second largest city in the state). Famous for its fusion of cultures, Southern hospitality, diverse cuisine and college football, it is also a significant port and a major industrial and petrochemical center.

Our Baton Rouge operations began in 1909 and have grown into an integrated complex that includes the Baton Rouge Refinery, the third largest refinery in the United States, the Baton Rouge Chemical Plant and several other plants and terminals. Its scope of products produced includes everything from traditional gasoline and diesel fuel to sophisticated chemical compounds that are used in diapers, shampoos, truck bed liners, makeup, crayons and hundreds more!

What role you will play in our team

We are seeking Senior Chemical Process Engineers to join us as an Utilities and Offsites Technology lead for our Baton Rouge Oil Refinery.

Our Senior Chemical Process Engineers (Complex Engineers) play a pivotal role in the successful operation of our plants and are responsible for initiating and leading improvements to unit performance in safety, production, and reliability in a dynamic team environment. You will think strategically, execute thoughtfully, and collaborate across many teams, levels, and situations. In this role, you will serve as a senior process technical resource, providing technical and operational expertise to address complex processes across business teams.

Complex engineers serve primarily to set longer term visons for unit performance and troubleshooting in addition to supporting day-to-day activities.

What you will do

  • Serve as the technical leader on the business team by:

  • Mentoring less experienced engineers on design practices, unit health monitoring, and troubleshooting

  • Provide off-hours support of abnormal and non-routine operations, including unit Turnarounds

  • Aiding in the development of long term vision and strategy for product line improvements

  • Organizing and designing plant testing and product trials

  • Serve as a senior resource either serving as or working with supervisors on the team to set clear objectives, and ensure priorities are aligned for the technical team

  • Influence others and drive toward solutions without direct authority

  • Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines, operations, and mechanical personnel and interface with corporate technology support

  • Ability to interface with 3rd party vendors (cost optimizations as well as developing/driving solutions)

  • Serve as process safety resource on business team leading Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments by developing closure plans and strategies for identified risks

  • Lead/support incident investigations as technical lead

  • Provide support for developing and implementing various capital projects to drive margin or mitigate SHE risk

  • Provide assistance in the field during plant startups, shutdowns or upsets

  • Demonstrating courage of conviction to drive healthy tension for both business team and corporate technology support to promote fit for purpose outcome

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • B.S. Chemical Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience in fuels/chemicals manufacturing roles specifically with exposure to Utilities and Offsites.

  • Strong exposure to tanks, pump skids, temporary facilities, boiler/steam generators, GTGs, etc

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Process design experience

  • Familiarity with advanced control strategies/optimization software

  • Working knowledge of RBI practices (corrosion damage mechanisms/mitigations, saltation, etc)

  • Risk assessment and HAZOP experience

  • Understanding of safety relief limits (modelling and evaluations)

  • Demonstrated understanding of modelling software (PROII, ASPEN, etc)

  • Kinetic Modelling (SOL, KBC Profimatics, etc)
