Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Technologist. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor is responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under initial supervision of the faculty investigator the research technologist performs biological experiments. Specific techniques used include cell and tissue culture, PCR, DNA extraction and analysis, gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry and immunostaining.

  • Work on independent projects and may be included as a co-author of publications resulting from work in the laboratory.

  • In consultation with a supervisor, the technologist will perform, evaluate and troubleshoot methods as necessary, prepare solutions and reagents following standard procedures and keep an organized lab notebook.

  • Meet at least weekly with principal investigator to report on research and laboratory status.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity with the operation of basic laboratory equipment and with sterile technique.

  • Able to efficiently use Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to learn new computer skills and applications quickly including how to install software, firmware, and manipulate hardware/peripherals.

  • Type quickly, write nimbly and legibly

  • Must be able to efficiently and proactively communicate with supervisors and coworkers.,

Physical Requirements

  • Manipulate small and large test tubes, flasks and pipettes.

  • Move some moderately-large equipment and boxes.

  • See very well at a short distance.

  • Move within the building and around campus.

  • Work at the bench (and sometimes at a microscope with micromanipulator, etc.) for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

  • The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, energetic and reliable.

  • Interest in learning a multitude of diverse techniques and flexibility regarding projects and protocols is important.
