Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology is seeking a Research Technologist to become part of a dynamic research team and perform bench and mouse experiments in the area of hematopoiesis and DNA repair. This individual will be expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly perform experiments and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct bench and mouse laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab.

  • Gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience. Run lab tests and complete measurements assigned.

  • Identify and resolves common problems involved in routine research assays.

  • Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance.

  • Increases own skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.

  • Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.

  • Set-up experiments based on defined standards.

  • Collect project data - maintain good records of all experimental history, procedures and results.

  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

  • Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring and ordering inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment.

  • Complete required trainings for assigned research.

  • Performs and evaluates research methods under supervision.

  • Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.

  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.

  • Meet regularly with Principal Investigator to review data accuracy, overall study progress and planning of future experiments.

  • Participate in all mandatory meetings to develop increasing knowledge of assigned research and broader scientific field.

  • Assist the principal investigator in developing and maintaining research protocols required to accomplish goals of studies.

  • Work collaboratively and assist less experienced staff in performing research.

  • Present experimental data at lab meetings regularly. If an abstract is accepted, present at national and/or international meetings.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($16.83 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
