Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland
The Umapathi lab is looking for a Research Technologist to join a translational research lab that studies the post-translational modification of cardiac proteins, cardiac re-programming/cardiac metabolism in order to better understand heart failure in patients and develop new therapies. We study these basic mechanisms in cells, animal models and from bio-specimens from heart failure patients. Under the general supervision of a physician-scientist faculty investigator, the individual will be responsible for performing routine experiments in the research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. The individual will carry out experiments under initial supervision until proven proficient in performing experiments independently. An ideal candidate will have experience in a basic science laboratory and have experience with molecular biology techniques and wet lab experiments. They will need excellent time management and multi-tasking skills, will need to be pro-active and able to problem solve, be thorough and highly motivated to learn new skills, including small animal (mouse) care, handling and procedures, cell culture experiments. She/he will be expected to perform lab procedures including cell line, mouse experiments, protein isolation and assay, qPCR, DNA and RNA extractions, sample processing and storage, data entry, presentations of results to other researchers, and some data analysis procedures.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using computer software applications.
Prepare summary of experimental protocols and relevant data to present/discuss with the faculty investigator.
Apply previous knowledge to troubleshoot experiment.
Keep a thorough and organized laboratory notebook to document experiments.
Maintain an orderly laboratory workspace.
Ensure laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization, and safety regulations.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Small animal (mouse) handling and procedures.
Maintain cardiac cell lines in tissue culture environment following established protocols.
Protein isolation and assay via Western Blotting.
Bacterial culture.
Nucleic acid isolation.
Quantitative RT-PCR (qPCR).
Immunoblotting.
Immunostaining.
Immunohistochemistry.
Reagent preparation.
Physical Requirements
Sitting in a seated position for extended periods of time.
Ability to remain standing and/or move about on feet for most of the workday.
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a basic science laboratory and experience with molecular biology lab techniques.
