Johns Hopkins University Research Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

General Summary/Purpose:

The research specialist will work independently and make judgements using prior lab experience and scientific knowledge. Work includes interpreting and evaluating results, troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of undergraduate and graduate students. In general, the candidate will be responsible for helping to manage day-to-day lab operations and will participate in research projects by other laboratory members, including, post-doctoral fellows, laboratory technicians, undergraduate, and graduate working in the laboratory. The research specialist will also be responsible for their own experiments studying the mechanism of mRNA enrichment to Drosophila germ granules.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Research Specialist will investigate the cellular and molecular processes that lead to mRNA enrichment in the embryo.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the employee will include:

  • Carrying out an independent research project using imaging and genetic approaches to generate mutations that affect mRNA enrichment,

  • Training undergraduate and graduate students in using Drosophila as a model organism, training students to perform fly assays and molecular biology experiments for their research projects,

  • Assisting students with imaging and analyzing data,

  • Fully maintaining the wet lab space, as well as the following for the Drosophila and tissue

Culture Research:

  • Maintaining lab databases of reagents (strains, plasmids, antibodies etc.),

  • Managing supplies,

  • Maintain fly stocks,

  • Interfaces with vendors, ordering consumables and equipment, maintaining records, and upholding safety regulations.

Independent Research:

  • The specialist will conduct his/her own research project and also assist/train other members of the lab in their research projects.

  • Goals will be to eventually publish research from projects independently conceived and executed.

Lab Management duties:

  • Supervising rotating graduate students and undergraduates in fly research projects

  • Training graduate and undergraduate students in using Drosophila as a model organism, fly assays and molecular biology experiments

  • Training students to use microscopes and computers for data acquisition and analysis

  • Applies published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI. This role will also apply research methods developed in-house.

  • Managing supplies, interfacing with vendors, ordering consumables and equipment, maintaining records, and upholding safety regulations for Drosophila research

  • Maintaining and organizing lab strains, bacterial clones, flies and other common lab reagent collections

  • Trains new lab technicians and specialists

Machines and/or Equipment used on the Job:

  • Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include E. coli liquid culture, tissue culture, autoclaves, thermocyclers, balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, fly pushing stations equipped with CO2 tanks, dissecting microscopes, compound microscopes and epifluorescence microscopes.

  • This position regularly interacts with vendors for price inquiries and negotiations; has independent responsibility regarding supplies and equipment, with a limited budget cap.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or similar.

  • Previous experience with and strong understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, and microscopy and fly genetics is strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational skills are required.

  • Record keeping & computer skills are very important.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • The specialist should be competent in Excel, Powerpoint (or Keynote), Word, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
