Johns Hopkins University Research Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Research Specialist . The successful candidate will be expected to be proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques that will allow them to work in both an independent manner as well as part of a collaborative team within the laboratory. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory members, the successful candidate will be responsible for: electrophysiological and imaging behavioral experiments, viral manipulation, surgical implantation of electrodes and imaging devices, histological analysis, data visualization and quantification, computational modeling, tissue harvesting, and maintaining mouse lines.

Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Specifically, the proficient care and management of mouse lines, skills in running and analyzing behavioral data, proficiency in drug administration and proper laboratory animal handling, experience conducting stereotaxic surgeries in mice, and experience in tissue harvesting, preparation, staining, and microscopic analysis.

The successful applicant is one who has the ability to work well with a team of lab scientists as well as independently. The successful candidate will also have strong organizational and problem -solving skills. It is expected that this person will make substantial scientific contributions to projects and be a strong participant in this work.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assistance with animal husbandry of the laboratory mouse colony. Following established procedures and protocols and using aseptic techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include electrophysiological, immunohistochemistry and imaging techniques.

  • Make scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.

  • Collaborate with lab members in development of new techniques and instruments.

  • Contribute toward the efficient utilization of resources, equipment and space.

  • Manage inventory, monitors supply levels, orders equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Participate in the development of lab goals and objectives.

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in coding in Matlab, R, Python, C.

  • Experience in data analysis, statistics, visualization, and algorithm development.

  • Proficiency in coding in Python.

Starting Salary Range: $16.92 - $29.61 JHRLY (Commensurate with experience)
