Kennedy Krieger Institute PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT - PSYCHIATRY in Baltimore, Maryland

Overview

The Physician Assistant collaborates with a multidisciplinary health team to deliver direct comprehensive care services and education to both well and ill patients. Under the direction of the Physician, the incumbent practices within the guidelines of the department, the Institute, and in accordance with the State of Maryland physician assistant regulations. This position is granted specified professional staff privileges by the Kennedy Krieger Institute Medical Board that are reviewed annually.

Responsibilities

  1. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments of patients with real, potential, acute, and/or chronic health problems, which may include psychosocial, cognitive, and personal asset limitations of the patient/family.

  2. Performs health screenings, requests orders, and performs and interpret tests. Establishes medical and nursing diagnosis, orders and evaluates diagnostic studies, performs and monitors therapeutic procedures, and assesses and/or manages follow-up plans.

  3. Assesses chronic health problems and refers patients to attending or primary provider as appropriate. Collaborates with other professionals to develop and implement a plan of care for the child, adolescent, or adult with an emphasis on wellness.

  4. Prescribes and monitors medications, including dosage, side effects, and adjustments.

  5. Records and documents health assessment data necessary in order to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services.

  6. Remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education.

  7. Educates caregivers and members of the multidisciplinary team concerning health issues such as medication administration, illness management, and disease prevention. Teaches children, adolescents, and adults about good health practices.

  8. Treats acute and minor illness.

  9. Develops, conducts, and evaluates formal and informal in-service and continuing education programs in area(s) of expertise for peer group and other disciplines.

  10. Participates in the research process by assisting others in applying scientific knowledge in physician assistant practice. Enhances physician assistant research quality and clinical relevance by promoting knowledge in clinical services and providing knowledge about how clinical services should be delivered.

  11. Participates in departmental, functional unit, and hospital committees as assigned.

  12. Serves as a clinical preceptor for medical students.

  13. Advocates for patients with developmental disabilities within medical, community, and school arenas.

  14. Participates in developing and implementing quality assurance programs.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess and maintain licensure as a Physician Assistant as required by the State of Maryland.

  • Must possess and maintain certification by the National Commission on Licensure of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

EDUCATION:

  • Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) required.

  • Completion of and graduation from a physician assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its successor.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two (2) years of related clinical experience required.
