THOR Solutions, LLC Naval Architect, Mid in Baltimore, Maryland

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Mid-Level Naval Architect to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Baltimore, MD. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.

  • Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.

  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.

  • Conduct analyses on stability studies, assist with inclining experiments and weight and stability tests, and oversee design development.

Location: Full time onsite at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD. May be limited "local remote" flexibility with customer approval.

Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. 

 

US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment. 

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire. 

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.

  • At least three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture.

  • Experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs preferred.

  • Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.

  • Experience with computer applications relating to naval architecture and ship design.

  • Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.

  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.

  • Proficient with common productivity software.

  • Strong communications skills.
