The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Research Technician to join the Center for Blood Oxygen Transport and Hemostasis (CBOTH) in the Department of Pediatrics./This position requires the selected candidate to work two (2) weekends per month. / UMB offers acomprehensive benefits packagethat prioritizes wellness, work/life balance, and professional development. Essential Functions * Performs routine biological procedures such as gel electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions; chemical procedures such as simple synthesis, or product isolation, or biophysical procedures such as optical and kinetics measurements. * Assists in conducting routine assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and complement fixations. * Prepares solutions, media, reagents and stains following established procedures. * Performs clinical processes such as cell or tissue cultures. * Collects, prepares, and processes specimens. * Assists with preventive maintenance and quality control of CBOTH Core equipment, according to schedule and established procedure. * Prepares chemical solutions, media, reagents, stains, and buffers. * Prepares biohazard waste for sterilization; autoclaves biohazard waste. * Collects, records, and enters research data. * Performs wipe tests, general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, spectrometers, and gas and liquid chromatographs. * Maintains chemicals and equipment inventory. * Ensures the availability of common laboratory supplies by cleaning and sterilizing glassware, autoclaving solutions and restocking PPE and laboratory supplies. Education:Bachelor’s degree in a biological or chemical science. Preferred Experience:1 to 3 years of experience in a research laboratory environment. Other:Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates/are/eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
