Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Field Staff Accountant in Baltimore, Maryland

Reporting to the Manager for Field Operations, the Field Staff Accountant will be responsible for daily, monthly, and yearly accounting activities of the field office including but not limited to accounts receivable, accounts payable, maintaining ledgers, and preparing reports. The accountant will b e responsible for keeping the organization and clients' numbers and budgets on track with accuracy.

    DUTIES

  • Responsible for recording cash receipts, including working collaboratively with other departments to assist with coding, invoice processing, and payment, along with maintaining the database.

  • Responsible for overseeing field office accounting activities including assisting with check requests, expense reports, Concur, and other field office activities.

  • Responsible for recording recurring activities such as prepaid, depreciation, and allocation entries.

  • Review account records for accuracy and compliance. In addition, ensure compliance with policies and procedures and identify and suggest improvements.

  • Responsible for accounts payable including preparing check requests, entering Accounts Payable (AP) invoices, filing, etc.

  • Responsible for employee expense reimbursements through Concur, including reviewing and processing journal entries in the accounting system.

  • Perform monthly financial closeout and account reconciliations.

  • Prepare ad-hoc or special financial reports as requested by management.

  • Assist with annual audit, prepare documentation for audit, and IRS Form 990 preparation.

  • Assist with budget preparation and monitoring to ensure revenue and costs are aligned.

  • Liaise and coordinate with Headquarters accounting and grant finance teams to implement LIRS policies and procedures.

  • Provide oversight of local and state funding in close coordination with the Field Office Manager.

  • Support the management and implementation of field office projects and grants by coordinating with funders and sub-grantees, collecting reports, preparing reports, and requesting reimbursements in a timely manner .

  • Support other finance-related processes, including process improvement and document retention management.

  • Supervise accounts payable clerk providing guidance, leadership, and direct support in all aspects of accounting and record keeping.

  • Build and maintain relationships with partner agencies, vendors, and banks

  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions

  • Perform other duties as assigned including supervision

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, business administration, or finance, or equivalent experience required .

  • Two or more years in accounting and with experience in a larger non-profit organization is strongly preferred.

  • MIP accounting software, SAP Concur, and/or SAP Invoice experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to identify critical priorities and take initiative to respond in a flexible way to changing needs.

  • Superior mathematical, analytical, and technical skills. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and motivated to remain current on a day-to-day basis.

  • Highly proficient in using general ledger software and spreadsheets.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce.
