Johns Hopkins University Carpenter in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Carpenter to performs a variety of carpentry work including construction, repair, assembly, and installation of temporary and permanent buildings, additions, partitions, and wooden structures and fixtures. Performs primarily maintenance, repair, and assembly, and some new construction jobs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs rough carpentry work such as construct wood forms, shipping boxes, protective sheds, staging platforms, scaffolding, flooring, office partitions, door, window casings, and others.

  • Performs finishing work such as assembly and/or installation of interior and exterior trim, benches, cabinets, window and door screens, glass and plexiglass windows, paneling, shelving, stairways, and others.

  • Measures, cuts, and layouts materials for work to be performed using the appropriate construction materials and carpentry tools. Joins and assembles materials, checking accuracy of work and making adjustments as necessary. Ensures proper fit of all joints to achieve the desired outcome and a neat appearance.

  • Observes all safety precautions in performing work duties to avoid harming self and others, and damaging property.

  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.

  • May be required to be available for 24 hour calls.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the carpentry trade at an apprentice level to include the following: ability to read blueprints, knowledge of structural design, layout, form building, rough framing, finishing, mathematics, building codes requirements, mechanical drawing.

  • Ability to use a variety of carpentry tools and materials.

  • Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to stand, walk or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis.

  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders periodically to perform building maintenance.

  • Ability to read and write in order to maintain records and work schedules, and to read work orders, specifications, and so forth.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or graduation equivalent.

  • Three years of relevant experience.

This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. These employees shall become members of the Bargaining Unit if this employment continues beyond four months. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.**
