Position Description

The Ophthalmic Assistant is the entry level position of the Ophthalmic Professionals. This individual assists the ophthalmologist by performing basic ophthalmic examinations or tests (such as visual acuity tests, strength of glasses, color vision testing, lensometry and tonometry) records patient history (medical, ocular and family) and other detailed information regarding the complaint and medication usage. Primary responsibilities include assessment, performance of specialized procedures , patient education, supporting and communicating with medical staff, and recording results of routine ophthalmic examination procedures on patients. Performs such ophthalmic patient services as instruction pre and post op patients about ocular dressings and shield and the use of ophthalmic and systemic medications and administers eye drops per direction of the physician. Performs simple maintenance on equipment and reports malfunctions. Practices under the directions of higher level personnel until certified. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS). Able to work in a fast paced environment under stressful positions. Must be able to work well as a team member, be flexible with work assignments (cross train) and communicate well.

Preferred Requirements

One year experience in an ophthalmologist's office as an ophthalmic assistant.
