JOB SUMMARY

Primarily responsible for administering all aspects of school operations related to student learning through high expectations for staff and students. Develops and evaluates the overall curriculum and instruction programs. Focuses on student success through culturally relevant curriculum, instructional programs, professional development, student proficiency and progress towards on time high school graduation. The Director of Teaching and Learning (Lead Teacher) collaborates with building principals on the supervision of Teachers and Instructional/Support staff.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides positive culturally appropriate leadership in creating a school environment conducive to teaching and learning that leads towards the accomplishment of the school’s mission by recognizing the needs and concerns of individual students, teachers and the community. 2. Develops, implements, and actively participates in academic programs by spending a majority of time working directly with building principals and instructional staff to improve the overall instructional program and practices; monitors, evaluates and makes necessary modifications to school programs to ensure the focus is on instructional alignment, improvement and student learning outcomes. Implements culturally appropriate curriculum and procedures which are aligned with state standards. 3. Actively participates in learning the Muckleshoot culture, language, customs and traditions so that, as an Instructional Leader, gains the ability to lead, integrate Muckleshoot and indigenous people’s culture into the curriculum, encourage and develop School Improvement Leadership Team, School Community Council and Instructional Teams that demonstrate the implementation of school goals and school improvement plan. 4. Gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and makes recommendation to the Chief School Administrator. 5. Promotes the success of all students by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner; and collaborating with families and community members. 6. Oversees, supervises and evaluates the Building Principals. Oversees the supervision of Teachers, and other Instructional/Support staff in the implementation of assigned programs/personnel; serves as mentor to staff; observes and provides feedback regarding performance; trains and motivates staff; celebrates successes related to student learning outcomes, works with staff to resolve problems; may appoint, assign, promote, place on probation or dismiss assigned staff as directed by the Chief School Administrator. 7. Assists with the development of school goals and strategic plan; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates division activities with other divisions and agencies as needed. 8. Assists with annual budget requests and assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget. 9. Develops, implements, monitors, evaluates and makes necessary modifications to school programs to ensure evaluation of each student’s educational growth and development; implements curriculum and procedures; manages curricula and extra-curricular program and their continuing review, evaluation and improvement. 10. Establishes and maintains effective communications with the community, parents, students and the public regarding school programs and services; communicates concerns to the Chief School Administrator; leads and secures parental and public involvement and support. 11. Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations. 12. Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures. 13. Attends various job-related meetings, workshops and conferences. 14. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

Washington State Administrator (Principal) certificate and five (5) years of school administration experience which includes three (3) years of mid-management and supervisory experience over a major function or program.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

  • School curriculum review, development and implementation instruction and education management including related laws, treaty issues, regulations, policies, and procedures and current literature, trends and developments.

  • Implementation of Restorative Practices and other positive discipline practices

  • Organization and time management.

  • Problem-solving and crisis resolution.

  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing with Tribal officials and managers, other governmental officials, consultants, employees, and community members, including preparation and delivery of public presentations , at times in controversial situations .

  • Conducting research, analyzing data and compiling comprehensive reports, with recommendations;

  • Interpreting administrative guidelines and applying them to the work situation.

  • Managing, scheduling, assigning, coordinating and monitoring the work of professional, technical and support staff .

  • Establishing effective working relationships with diverse groups and individuals

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

Licenses or Certifications Required

A valid Washington State Teaching certificate and a Washington State Administrator (Principal) certificate are required upon hire.
