The transportation industry constantly strives to execute its operation efficiently. From network activities such as the dispatching of trains to intermodal terminals where these trains are built— efficiency is key. New technologies such as automation present greater opportunities for novel optimization algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to deliver value to the transportation industry.

Who will you be working with?

As a member of the Operations Research and Advanced Analytics team, you will work closely with product managers, owners, and engineers to develop and implement cutting-edge network planning and optimization algorithms for various Wabtec products including Yard Planner. You will also be responsible for interacting with railroad customers, operations research experts and universities in developing state of the art algorithms and solution techniques.

How will you make a difference?

You will be responsible for developing algorithms and models to incorporate in Wabtec products such as Yard and Movement Planners. Such models and smarts embedded in Wabtec products will help railroad customers and users to make optimal/better decisions and automate the process.

What do we want to know about you?

You must have:

  • MS or PhD in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science

  • Minimum of 5 years of software development experience in optimization/network modeling/machine learning/AI with emphasis on algorithm/heuristic implementation

  • Experience in object-oriented programming such as Java, C#, or C++ Experience in using Machine learning and AI tools such as Python and R

  • Demonstrated awareness of how to succeed in ambiguous circumstances

  • Automation experience is a plus

  • Experience in using optimization suites such as CPLEX or Gurobi is also a plus

What will your typical day look like?

  • Model large scale transportation network and terminal operations to optimize efficiency

  • Collect and analyze operational data to determine the effectiveness of optimization models and algorithms

  • Implement proof of concepts to help make technology choices and validate modeling assumptions

  • Liaise with customers, operations researchers and subject matter experts to improve algorithm effectiveness against Key Performance Indicators

  • Work with Wabtec software product owners to identify model and algorithm behaviors which are common across the industry

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Atlanta, GA or Melbourne, FL

  • Must be willing to travel up to 15% of your time

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
