WestRock Company Process Control Engineer, PM & Stock Prep in Atlanta, Georgia

Job Summary

Reporting to the EMS Manager of Process Control and Optimization, the EMS Process Control Engineer, Paper Machines and Stock Prep, provides operational, project, and technical support to the other EMS functional groups and to local Mill Departments as needed. This position supports capital projects and provides technical support in the 30 WestRock paper mills and 3 extrusion plants in the USA, Canada, Brazil and India. Travel is required.

Role Responsibilities

  • Field incoming problems from end users to support the efficient operation of all Paper Mill and Stock Prep. equipment within the WestRock mill system.

  • Perform hands-on fixes at the control system and instrumentation level for all Paper Mill and Stock Prep. system operations.

  • Manage and/or assist in the deployment of new control system configurations, hardware, and infrastructure.

  • Provide continuous monitoring of APC, control loop, and equipment performance.

  • Develop, execute, and assist in optimization efforts at all mill facilities.

  • Support and development of all control schemes that are related to the Paper Machine and Stock Prep. Areas.

  • Develop and maintain standardized control system narrative database for each equipment type.

  • Serve as primary liaison between the EMS E&C Group and the Operations Steering teams for your assigned process area.

  • Provide technical assistance to mills as requested.

  • Facilitate the transfer of Best Practices/Technology between the mills.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic plans. Support FEP-1, -2 & -3 development.

  • Collaborate with engineering consultants, manufacturers, and third-party integrators during conceptual design.

  • Review project narratives, specifications, and other documents produced by engineering consultants, manufacturers, and third-party integrators to verify technical accuracy.

  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of DCS, QCS, PLC and other control systems.

  • Design, implement, commission, and maintain mill wide APC application deployments.

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or closely related degree is preferred. Industry and/or compatible military experience will be considered.

  • Minimum of 10+ years of process control engineering or related experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience in the operation, installation, startup, and maintenance of paper machines and their supporting equipment is required.

  • Experience applying statistics to assess control loop performance, dynamic models, variability characteristics and improvement opportunities.

  • Must have the ability to tune and optimize process equipment online.

  • Proficiency in MD and CD controls.

  • Must have a strong technical understanding of both control system programing and equipment control philosophy for all paper machine and stock prep. equipment.

  • OSI PI experience is required.

  • Excellent problem-solving ability - Determining causes of operating errors, developing and implementing sustainable solutions.

  • Strong leadership abilities including critical thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Process Analysis, Knowledge, and Skills - Determining how a process should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
