Position Summary

The Department of Physiology at Morehouse School of Medicine is looking for a talented Postdoctoral Fellow. The position will be based in the laboratory of Dr. Leanne Burnham within the Department of Physiology. This Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in a basic science research project that examines the role of HER2 and androgen receptor in prostate cancer as well as the ability of HER2 overexpression to drive worse outcomes in African American men. In addition to bench work, this candidate will have multiple collaborative opportunities to translate scientific knowledge into community practice and clinical application.

Position Summary and Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of routine and non-routine laboratory research experiments. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.

  • Troubleshoots procedures if experiment results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.

  • Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles and analyzes data obtained from work performed.

  • Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design.

  • Contributes to preparation of manuscripts and grant submissions.

  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.

  • Travels to meetings to represent the lab and to present new data.

  • Strong mouse model experience is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in life or biomedical sciences, or a related discipline from a regionally accredited college is required. Examples include biological sciences, pharmacology, or related field of study. Ability to work independently and as a part of research team.

  • High motivation and desire to be part of multidisciplinary group.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of animal model experience.

  • Techniques required: cell culture, cell viability assays, morphology imaging, migration assays, invasion assays, qPCR, Western blot, husbandry, ELISAs, DNA extraction, lentiviral transfections, siRNA transfections, CRSPR /Cas9, husbandry, PDX models.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Willingness and availability to provide hands-on training to students and lab interns.

  • Maintain research data in electronic laboratory notebooks and prepare summary reports, slide presentations and report findings to investigator.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of cancer biology

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

  • Serve as a key contributor in research activities, under the mentorship of the Principal Investigator.

  • Independently manages research projects from inception to completion and reporting.

  • Will develop new research areas, including potentially research projects independent of the main goals of the lab (with permission and consultation from the Principal Investigator.

  • Responsible for designing and performing research studies, collecting and analyzing data.

  • Presents data in the form of weekly updates and other formats (including but not limited to scientific conferences and publications).

  • Develops complex techniques, and teachers these procedures as needed. Supervises any student assigned to help with various research project tasks.

  • Will provide training and mentoring to students working on the research study, providing conceptual and technical training.

May apply for grant funding of independent projects, as applicable.
