Southern Company Disability Specialist II or Senior in Atlanta, Georgia

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to investigate, analyze, evaluate and determine employee benefits related to Workers' Compensation and Short-Term Disability Claims. The incumbent is responsible for obtaining a timely and medically appropriate return to work and minimize the cost of each claim and settlement. The senior disability specialist is an expert at Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and short-term disability issues and procedures. This individual must demonstrate an advanced capability in all areas of FMLA and short-term disability case management.

This position may be filled as Specialist II (GSE03) or Senior (GSE04). Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education, and certifications may be eligible for the more advanced position.

Functional Expertise:

  • Manage the integrated disability vendor for Workers’ Compensation, FMLA and Short-Term Disability.

  • For short term disability cases, confirm employees' eligibility and benefit levels.

  • Monitor vendor performance and act as liaison between vendor and department.

  • Report short term disability cases to the long-term disability insurer, according to specified time frames.

  • Maintain reporting standards and present case reviews to the Large Claims Review Committee.

  • Subject matter expert for all areas of FMLA and short-term disability.

  • Ability to handle worker’s compensation claims as needed.

Business Acumen:

  • Coordinate and develop with the Medical Care Specialist plans to return employees to work at the earliest medically appropriate time including using a transitional work duty period, if required.

  • Prepare a comprehensive evaluation for long term cases.

Engagement:

  • Coordinate all claims management and return to work efforts with the Medical Care Specialist

  • Participate in regular reviews of pending claims and return to work strategies with Human Resources, Legal, relevant management employees and absence management vendor.

  • Serve as needed on the company Disability Management Council.

  • Track loss experience and identify trends and underlying issues related to Leave Management to Manager, Director and Human Resources.

Driving Results:

  • Adheres to all Best Practice service standards.

  • Regularly review the integrated leave management vendors’ efforts to ensure efficiency, cost effectiveness and compliance with contract.

  • This position requires a very strong command of all disability issues and is a strong subject matter expert on all areas of disability management.

SPECIALIST II

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred:

  • Associate In Claims (AIC)

  • Georgia Workers’ Compensation Adjuster License

  • Certified Leave Management Specialist

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in claims management

Preferred:

  • Equivalent academic education and experience

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Strong knowledge in handling cases from Complex to Catastrophic.

  • Demonstration of analytical thinking is exhibited in complex situations and recognition of multiple connections to reach appropriate case decisions.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.

  • Must evidence a strong and seasoned ability to strategize, prioritize and negotiate; demonstrate confident decisiveness and sound judgment.

  • Customer focused and approachable with a high level of comfort dealing with all levels of management.

  • Able to problem solve and make timely decisions.

  • Team-oriented, able to work in a teamwork environment and provide coaching to other team members.

  • Goal oriented.

  • Accountable for work product.

  • Able to handle complex claims from inception through trial when necessary.

  • Maintains Quality and Dedicated to Excellence as evidenced by consistently complying with Best Practices service standards.

  • Willing to continue education to keep apprised of latest industry and statutory laws and trends.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.

SENIOR SPECIALIST

Education, Certifications/Licenses:
