Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools (OWNCS) educates students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Our educational philosophy is based on inquiry, active and experiential learning, and social justice.

                                                                        Position Summary

O WNCS 1 Elementary School, located in Astoria, Queens  seeks an inspiring music teacher for school year 2023-2024 who is responsible for teaching music education to students in grades K-5th and assists in the improvement and appreciation of music instruction throughout the school community. The school's music curriculum supports the growth  of our students' enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences, including singing, moving to music, playing of instruments and listening to various music repertoires. Our ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of OWNCS, an understanding and respect for the culture of all community members and a desire for working in a school setting that fosters a love for children.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

● Teaches general music to kindergarten- 5th grade including harmony, appreciation, history, and ensemble. 

​​​​​​ ● Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students. 

● Differentiates music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body. 

● Teaches and refines the music curriculum based on NAfME’s standards of creating, performing, and responding. 

● Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive environment during classes and musical performances. 

● Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students. 

● Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. 

● Inspires and motivates students to extend themselves and learn to enjoy music in a setting outside of the classroom.

Required Education and Skills

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education or related discipline from US accredited university or college.

  • Knowledge of NY State Learning Standards

  • Must have appropriate credentials as designated by New York State Education Department and in accordance with definitions and requirements to be designated a highly qualified and certified teacher as defined by NCLB.

  • Must be authorized to work at OWN Charter Schools through appropriate NYSED fingerprint clearance.

  • Must demonstrate competency in all areas of content responsibility and be computer literate.

  • Must be able to:

  • Communicate through superior written and oral communications skills.

  • Exhibit a high caliber of expertise in subject matter.

  • Work on multiple projects and respond to requests and deadlines in an accurate, timely manner.

  • Make sound decisions within the parameters of authority.

  • Be courteous, professional and tactful at all times.

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with faculty, staff, board members, parents, students, authorizer and community.
