Overview

Axient LLC. is seeking a Space Technology - Senior Nuclear Engineering Analyst to provide support to HQ U.S. Space Force (USSF) Chief Technology Innovation Office (CTIO) and Space Futures Command. Candidate will also support and integrate the work of the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Space Vehicles directorate (AFRL/RV) and others with HQ USSF. Further, this candidate will integrate work with Space Systems Command, Navy Research Lab, and Department of Energy in support of HQ USSF. This position will be based out of the Axient Arlington VA office, however, with approval of appropriate responsible Axient leadership, work can be performed from remote locations, specifically including Kirtland AFB, Wright Paterson AFB, and Patrick Space Force Base.

Candidate must be a skilled professional leader, with a strong background in Space and military, applications of nuclear technology in support of power, propulsion, and mission support. Candidate must have skills in engineering management and oversight, logistics, operational energy, nuclear technology, and project management support experience to work the nuclear component of Space Operational Energy (SOE).

Responsibilities

Work will include supporting the Pentagon Space Force Staff and AFRL/RV staff in the management oversight of Space nuclear technology innovation initiatives and SOE. These include but are not limited to, developing a Space Energy Strategy and associated nuclear technology roadmaps to support future Space Force needs for advanced nuclear powered on-orbit maneuver, mission energy, and associated USSF ground launch and support infrastructure. Work will be in coordination with HQ Space Force staffs, to include HQ USSF CTIO and Space Futures Command, as well as AFRL, Space Systems Command (SSC), and other agencies as directed by HQ USSF and Axient leadership. SOE nuclear work will include development of strategies, presentations, briefings, technology roadmaps, and technical support as needed to support HQ USSF. This work will be done as directed by HQ USSF and Axient leadership, and as directed in coordination with AFRL, SSC, NRL, USSPACECOM, Office of the Undersecretary for Acquisition and Sustainment (OUSD A&S) Office of Operational Energy Innovation (OE-I).

Work may include support to HQ USSF staff, AFRL/RV, SSC/S3 and other Department of the Air Force (DAF) staffs as directed by HQ USSF and Axient leadership. Work will include integrating potential and innovative nuclear capabilities with a variety of multi/all domain operational energy projects, to include, nuclear, chemical, and photovoltaic, and other forms of energy, across the domains of air/land/sea/space/cyber.

The Axient nuclear engineering candidate must be able to support the USSF government customer(s) in the development of innovative, potential nuclear capabilities and systems and the pursuit of operationalizing missions/platforms in support of USSF objectives.

Work includes: 1) Understanding and communicating the Space nuclear technical gaps and military benefits associated with a broad range of energy topics and specific RDT&E efforts, with the ability to assimilate and explain complex nuclear S&T issues and summarize them to technical and non-technical audiences; 2) developing concepts for long-endurance, continuous power sources that provides uninterruptible power for Space operations, including power and maneuver; 3) concepts to increase efficiency of propulsion and power system(s) to be efficient, compact leading to space qualified electric propulsion and power systems, platform power, and beamed power if/as may be possible; 4) providing USSF and AFRL, support, advice, and analysis on nuclear issues. Including but not limited to nuclear related space energy, power, and propulsion issues; 5) provide support and as needed attend USSF, AFRL, OSD (e.g., OECIF/OEPF), or other meetings. Prepare inputs for reports, briefings, strategy documents, and/or draft policies through research, analysis, writing, and soliciting data and compiling inputs from staff in partnering offices; 6) reviewing USSF, AFRL/RV, or designated DoD and warfighter, internal or external documents to identify potential risks or opportunities for of nuclear capabilities applied to advance energy technology dominance/superiority; 7) drafting written reports supporting space energy strategy, space nuclear power, and the integrating of nuclear energy into future Space Force architectures; and 8) support modeling and simulation activities, including wargaming, detailing the impact to the warfighter; and other tasks as assigned.

The senior engineer manager must have skills to 1) communicate clearly, 2) work well with government and commercial engineers and interface across the HQ US Space Force, AFRL and Space Systems Command staffs, USSPACECOM, and as needed with Office of the Secretary of Defense offices.

Qualifications

  • BS and MS in Space and/or STEM related fields

  • Minimum of 15 years of space nuclear experience.

  • Must be eligible for a Secret clearance upgradeable to TS/SCI.

Position includes travel 10-20% of time, field work, potentially at Space launch locations on unimproved surfaces, and the lifting and moving of hardware components and couriering documents and components as needed.
