Amazon Editor in Chief, Internal Corporate Communications in Arlington, Virginia

Description

Amazon is seeking an Editor in Chief to oversee editorial content on our companywide internal channels. This is a new role on the Internal Corporate Communications team within Global Communications and Community Impact. The EIC will lead our editorial team in creating both original and evergreen stories and will work closely with stakeholders across the organization to reframe and optimize Amazon news stories for an internal audience.

The candidate is an experienced journalist or storyteller with excellent writing and editing skills and strong editorial judgment. Previous experience writing content targeted to internal employees is highly preferred. They will manage multiple stories and company news items across a wide range of topics and should be able to shape our editorial content and strategy using a mix of audience data and innate story judgment. They should be a pro at shaping stories with a compelling voice and angle and should feel comfortable collaborating with writers across the organization to reframe stories. You will also be responsible for ideating, assigning, and generating original, compelling stories for our internal audiences, focusing largely around high-priority company initiatives. They will be responsible for framing stories uniquely for our internal channels.

This person should feel comfortable working with data to understand audience interest and use that to guide editorial strategy. However, they should also embrace innovative storytelling and experiment with new types of content. They will bring fresh, innovative content ideas and solutions as well as executional excellence to our strategy. This person will manage an editorial team, which includes a features editor, U.S. editor, and writers. They should also be an excellent communicator who should be able to galvanize multiple stakeholders – including PR and business leaders — around a successful content approach. The successful candidate will have leadership experience; a proven track record of developing and delivering compelling stories and campaigns with measurable results; and a strong understanding of the current digital content landscape. They should be a strategic, global thinker; goal oriented; and enjoy working in a fast-paced, start-up culture.

This position can be located in Arlington, VA (Washington, D.C); or Seattle, WA.

Key job responsibilities

• Strategy: Develop and implement the internal content editorial strategy, including original stories around major company moments, evergreen stories, and optimized Amazon business updates.

• Execution: Maintain a very high bar for all content published globally to all employees and reinforce editorial standards and best practices across the broader Internal Corporate Communications team.

• Content: Oversee editorial content and campaigns tied to key storytelling and news moments and collaborate with employee-facing channel owners, including A to Z (the company intranet), companywide email newsletters, digital screens, and more.

• Partnership: Act as a content thought partner to business comms teams, providing counsel and guidance throughout all stages of editorial planning, execution, and analysis.

• Measurement & Evaluation: Working with the Channels and Insights leader, set content goals and implement cohesive measurement plans to understand program success. Make real-time program adjustments based on results.

• Experiment & Scale: Experiment with story types and topics, develop best practices, and create playbooks and toolkits to make our global work more consistent and efficient.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience guiding creative input, development and execution from concept to completion

  • Experience managing teams

  • Experience using data and metrics to drive improvements

  • Experience driving direction and alignment with cross-functional teams

  • Experience working with executive leadership in large organizations

  • 12+ years of communications or journalism experience, managing a publication or division of writers

  • 8+ years of digital content or journalism experience

  • Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading across multiple locales

  • Strongly prefer candidates with experience managing internal communications teams

  • Masterful storyteller with a journalism background

  • Experience developing, editing, and planning web and/or blog content, including using CMS tools

  • Innovates and creates new, attention-grabbing, and effective story ideas

  • Has worked globally and developed scalable best practices

  • Ability to exercise high judgment in narrow time-frames

  • Self-driven, entrepreneurial spirit—enjoys taking responsibility and making things happen

  • Knowledgeable about digital communications and story trends and able to apply these insights to their work

  • Thrives in a collaborative environment and is willing to roll up their sleeves to get the job done

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $140,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $232,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
