These positions provide customer service to guests at the Minnesota Zoological Gardens and are responsible for greeting guests and staff, performing cashier duties and membership sales, and responding to questions and requests for information in a prompt, courteous, and respectful manner. Positions are also responsible for crowd control, equipment rental, handling lost and found items, and assisting with relaying communication throughout the Minnesota Zoo. Some positions may perform Zoo carousel operation and guest transportation on the Zoo campus.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing quality customer service in a prompt, courteous, and respectful manner to all guests and staff so that a positive public image is presented and ensure a positive guest experience.

  • Performing cashier duties so that accurate sales are collected (cash/credit charges) and transaction records are maintained.

  • Monitoring animal touch experiences to maintain safety of the animals and guests.

  • Operating the Conservation Carousel (if over age of 18) so that guests have a safe and positive Zoo experience.

  • Operation of vehicles (if over age of 18) so that guests can be transported throughout the Zoo campus as requested in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Perform other guest service tasks promptly, accurately, and safely so that the safety and comfort of Zoo guests is maintained, the overall guest experience is positive, and the stewardship of the Zoo grounds is preserved.

Minimum Qualifications

These positions are intermittent (not regularly scheduled), hours will vary depending on the season, days and hours of work will vary and include evenings, weekends, school breaks, and holidays. No person may be employed as a student worker for more than 36 total months.

To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker you must be a student enrolled in an educational program or planning to enroll within three months. Students may be “off“ for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. As a student you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment. Must be a student enrolled in high school or a post-secondary or graduate program or planning on enrolling within three months.

Other requirements:

  • Knowledge of grammar and spelling sufficient to read and write messages, instructions, and other materials.

  • Knowledge of math sufficient to total supply order bills or charge visitors appropriate for purchased goods.

  • Ability to determine accuracy of admission tickets and process cash and credit card transactions on a point-of-sale terminal.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing sufficient to provide information to visitors and staff, initiate guest interactions, and communicate cross-culturally with people from all backgrounds.

  • Basic knowledge of sales and record keeping procedures.

  • Ability to work in loud, crowded, and fast-paced environments.

  • Ability to monitor animal touch experiences to main the safety of animals and guests.

  • Proficiency with computer applications

  • Problem solving ability.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Regular use of Microsoft Outlook and Excel

  • For select positions with driving requirements, an unrestricted Class D Driver‘s License will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in making change at a cash register.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and inclement weather conditions for long periods of time.
