St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Pharmacy Technician II - Pharmacy in Apple Valley, California

We are looking for a Pharmacy Technician II for the Pharmacy Department at St. Mary Medical Center

Location: Apple Valley CA

Work Schedule: Part time - 20 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 10-hour, Days (Variable)

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist in all phases of the department operation that the Pharmacy Technician can legally perform, including unit dose, IV admixture, profiling, packaging, record-keeping, stocking, billing and clerical duties. The Pharmacy Technician employs intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills through the utilization of the pharmacy process to assist patients and customers in achieving maximum health potential. At St. Mary Medical Center, the Pharmacy Technician is responsible for inpatient hospital pharmacy functions.

Essential Functions:

  • Fills physician orders, medication kits, Pyxis stations, or stock requisitions.

  • Replenishes medications in emergency crash carts or floor stock areas.

  • Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products.

  • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately.

  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate areas.

  • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.

  • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

  • Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.

  • Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages.

  • Picks up medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery routes.

  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.

  • Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.

  • Answers requests at the window and makes stat deliveries to patient care areas when requested.

  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation. Files documentation in appropriate locations.

  • Leads other technicians through short-term workflow challenges.

  • Demonstrates effective competence in five of the following areas:

  • MEDITECH Order Entry.

  • Chemotherapy Admixing.

  • Pyxis System Maintenance.

  • Anesthesia Controlled Substance Audits.

  • Pyxis Medication Unload Process.

  • Pyxis Medication Inventory Process.

  • Monitoring Pyxis All Station Event Report and Discrepancy Resolution.

  • Wholesaler Purchasing and Direct Order Purchasing.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of responsibilities of a pharmacist and limits of pharmacy technician activities.

  • Knowledge of proper aseptic technique.

  • Basic typing skills.

  • Knowledge of basic drug terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • H.S. Diploma or GED or equivalent educ/experience

  • Coursework/Training Sufficient training to obtain Pharmacy Technician certification.


  • 2 years Pharmacy Technician experience in a hospital setting or equivalent experience.

  • Experience working with computers.

Licenses/Certifications: Current California Registered Pharmacy Technician Certificate per Primary Source Verification. Original California Certificate of Pharmacy Technician to be presented (within 30 days).
