Communicable Disease unit is committed to developing novel antibiotics for tuberculosis and build on the success of bedaquiline, a groundbreaking drug developed by Janssen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from a single pathogen and the first cause of death AMR-related. At Communicable Disease we face tuberculosis pandemia from multiple angles by trying to develop new technologies that would benefit patients compliance and would help to achieve a simpler, shorter and safer treatment for MDR-TB patients.

This position is linked with a VLAIO O&O project that will explore de discovery and characterization of fix dose combinations (FDC) for MDR-TB treatment. The work will be performed together with the University of Leuven (KUL) where they will explore new potential strategies for FDC.

We at Communicable Disease are looking for a highly motivated and innovative scientist, who will take responsibility in our Discovery-Translational team in Beerse, Belgium.

Job Description

The Scientist will mainly develop, conduct and lead in vitro new assays/models and evaluate new tuberculosis combinations as well as identifying and delivering new approaches and collaborations to support our efforts in TB drug discovery. They will also assist with the various M. tuberculosis molecular biology needs of the different projects (this position is 60% laboratory based). The successful candidate will also help with the management of exciting projects, as well as drive the setup of new ones. All this is done in a team-oriented, result driven, international research environment that provides an excellent career opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Scientist.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, supervise the initiation, execution and reporting new M. tuberculosis assay (phenotypic, molecular, biochemical) for characterize drug candidates, drug combinations and fix dose combinations.

  • Efficiently lead external collaborations and communications within international consortium. From contracting to execution and reporting.

  • Being the point of contact for KUL and run all internal activities within the different functions (pharmacokinetics and discovery pharmaceuticals).

  • Maintain accountability for the end-to end execution process (from protocol to complete report) for projects.

  • Maintain a strong awareness of the relevant scientific literature and contemporary laboratory practices.

  • 50% time dedication to lab-based activities.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Microbiology or relevant Biological Sciences and with 1-3 years of relevant experience (including post-doctoral studies).

  • Experience in working in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory environment.

  • Good publication record with at least one first author publication in a relevant field.

  • Ability to design, execute, analyze, and accurately detail laboratory experiments.

  • Experience with TB host pathogen interaction models is a plus and willing to assist with in vivo work.

  • Data science experience and knowledge about PK/PD modeling will be a plus.

  • Proficient in English.

  • Proficient in MS Office and Graphpad Prism.

  • Proficiency in presenting and interpretation of integrated data from multiple functions.

  • Demonstration of robust oral and written communication skills. Shown ability to collaborate, empathize with team members of different backgrounds required.

  • Ability to work well in a quick paced, dynamic and interactive environment is vital.
