The successful candidate will work within the Connected Aircraft Systems Division of Collins Aerospace as an avionics integration test and communications systems engineer within the GLOBALink air-to-ground communications service with a focus on VHF Datalink (VDL), Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN), and Inmarsat satellite data link service.

This position requires advanced knowledge and experience in air to ground data link communications protocols and message flow. The successful candidate will apply and develop this knowledge in conducting detailed investigations and providing timely guidance and resolutions to customer-reported end-to-end communications problems. The systems engineer will be the interface with airline and business aviation customers, work directly with Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), avionics and aircraft manufacturers as well as internal teams including network engineering, customer implementation, and senior management.

This role will prepare clear and concise written reports and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers. Providing frenquent and clear communicaiton with internal steakholders, vendors, and internal and external customers to invetigate and resolve ATN and ACARS and SATCOM issues.

Specific assignments for this position include:

  • Organize and conduct system acceptance testing for European ANSPs as they introduce Air Traffic Control Controller Pilot DataLink Communication (CDLC) computers onto the Collins Aerospace ATN network. Review performance: verify compatibility and produce end-of-test reports.

  • Lead the VDLM2 Interoperability Test Facility: Test new or revised aircraft data link systems using standardized system test procedures to verify interoperability and compatibility with our Collins Aerospace VDLM2/ATN network.

  • ATN Test Service Support: Maintain and operate our test network elements and ATN CPDLC tools to support avionics and aircraft manufacturers as they conduct operational ground and flight tests in support of their certification efforts.

  • GLOBALink/VDL Customer Investigations and Field Support: Using field data, detailed knowledge of ATN communications protocols and specialized analytical tools, investigate reported communications problems within the field and isolate to a root cause. Prepare written reports and work with industry partners and customers to arrive at a satisfactory solution.

  • Satellite Service Test & Support: tasks include writing test plans & procedures documents, conduct tests, prepare written reports, and maintain an ongoing relationship with avionics manufacturers to schedule testing and resolve equipment compatibility issues. The engineer will also provide systems engineering and technical support, guide customers with configuration and initial activation of new data link systems on the operational network.

    Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience

  • Three or more years of work experience in computer communications, protocols, and air/ground communications.

  • Experience in Microsoft office applications including Word, Power Point, and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (strong preference)

  • Utilizing Excel; general experience using developed engineering tools and databases to conduct analysis and studies.

  • Detailed oriented, highly organized, and able to work on multiple activities concurrently with shifting priorities.

  • Motivated self starter with problem solving talents and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Experience with communications protocols and industry standards including: ISO 8208, AEEC Standard 631, ICAO 9776, ISO OSI protocols including AVLC, CLNP, TP4, MSNDCF, & TCP/IP

  • Knowledge of Inmarsat Communications systems and related AEEC standards, 741, 761, and 781.

  • Knowledge of Industry avionics standards including AEEC, RTCA, and ICAO.

  • Knowledge of the following protocols and functions as it relates to aviation communications: ACARS, ATN, & VDLM2, CPDLC, ARINC 631, Aviation VHF Link Control (AVLC), and ANSPs.

  • Satellite communications experience

The salary range for this role is 85,000 USD - 179,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
