Summary

The Section of Vascular Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School (Ann Arbor) seeks a highly motivated individual to work as a Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate in the laboratory of Dr. Katherine Gallagher. The research in this laboratory works to improve innate immunity and cell function in vascular diseases. Cutting-edge techniques and a supportive environment have led to many laboratory projects that have translational potential. In addition to providing technical support to senior members of the laboratory, the candidate will also lead an independent research project.

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will work independently and as part of a team to conduct, develop and design moderately complex research experiments utilizing immunohistochemistry, PCR, ELISA and CHIP. Review progress and evaluate results of experiments.

Lab Management:

  • Oversight of day-to-day lab operations

A strong background in cellular and molecular biology techniques including:

  • mammalian tissue culture

  • siRNA and plasmid transfection into mammalian cells

  • cloning and subcloning methods

  • western blotting and immune/co-immunoprecipitation

  • preparation of samples to be used for ChIP-/RNA- sequencing

  • immunoflouresence

  • magnetic activated cell sorting

  • ability to work with crispr and cre-lox models

Develop, design and conduct complex research experiments:

  • develop new techniques; formulate methods, recommend improvements/solutions

  • collect data and conduct analysis, interpret and implement research methodology; evaluate results

  • monitor progress and refine or adapt methodologies

Ability to work independently without immediate supervision; evaluate courses of action and make decisions.

Co-author publications and co-present results at meetings/conferences

Mentor and teach students and junior trainees.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in health science discipline

  • 4 - 5 years of research experience in a related field

  • Independent decision making

  • Highly organized in record keeping and technically meticulous

Desired Qualifications*

  • PhD or Master's degree

  • Experience mentoring and teaching students and junior trainees

  • Experience with eResearch Animal Management System (eRAM)
