Summary

The University of Michigan Food Allergy Center is seeking a Research Lab Specialist. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct studies using samples from a newly founded food allergy-focused human birth cohort and deploy Food Allergy Center models to better understand food anaphylaxis. This position offers unique opportunities for a motivated individual to work closely with the principal investigator and laboratory members in a highly collegial translational science laboratory.

Responsibilities*

The ideal candidate will have experience in basic cellular and molecular biology techniques including mammalian cell culture, qPCR, protein expression and purification, and immunological techniques such as ELISA and flow cytometry. Prior experience working with murine models is desired. The ideal candidate will apply these skills to human-derived sample sets and will learn and take responsibility for the measurements of human IgE using the Phadia 250 instrument within the context of the food allergy birth cohort mentioned above. The candidate will also engage in laboratory maintenance activities. The candidate is expected to work independently and in concert with other members of the lab. The successful candidate will have regularly scheduled meetings individually with the Principal Investigator and group meetings with the larger team.

Required Qualifications*

  • Associate Level: Bachelor?s degree is required. 1-3 years of experience in a related field (immunology, biochemistry, cellular molecular biology, or related biomedical field). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience.

  • Intermediate Level: Bachelor?s degree is required. 4-5 years of experience in a related field (immunology, biochemistry, cellular molecular biology, or related biomedical field). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with general basic molecular and cellular biology techniques and immunological techniques: ex. mammalian tissue culture, protein production/purification, western blotting, isolation of DNA, RNA, qPCR, ELISA.

  • Experience with flow cytometry and analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

  • Willingness to develop Standard Operating Procedure documents and support the regulatory aspects of the birth cohort study.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications*

  • M.S. in the above fields.

  • 4+ years of experience in a research laboratory.

  • Experience working independently with murine models for in vivo studies (including techniques such as immunization or allergen sensitization, blood and tissue collection, blood and tissue processing).

  • Experience performing primary cell isolation from animal tissue.

  • Strong interest in research and learning new techniques under guidance by the PI and other lab personnel.
