Who We Are
The Institute for Social Research (ISR) is the largest social science research institute in the United States, and the Survey Research Center accounts for nearly 70% of the total volume of the institute. An administrative hub of five professionals currently manages three research programs in the Center, all of whom report directly to the Research Administration Senior Manager. The three programs include:
The Youth and Social Issues Program consists of scholars studying the changing attitudes and behaviors of American youth, specifically related to drug/alcohol use. The cornerstone of the program is the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study ( www.monitoringthefuture.org ), a longitudinal and cross sectional research project studying the drug use and lifestyles of youth and adults in the US.
The Population, Neurodevelopment and Genetics Program ( www.pngprogram.com ) consists of scholars and projects that link developmental, cognitive, and clinical, public health, and educational science with neurobiology and genetics.
The Social Environment and Health Program ( https://seh.isr.umich.edu/ ) is an interdisciplinary research program focused on the intersections between social and environmental contexts and their impacts on population health and health inequalities. The cornerstone project is the National Neighborhood Data Archive ( https://nanda.isr.umich.edu/ ).
Responsibilities*
This new position will be an integral part of the administrative team, with broad responsibilities managing a range of administrative duties for the programs.
35% Post-Award Project Administrative and Financial Management:
Reconcile assigned accounts (internal, sponsored) on a monthly basis for accuracy and allowability and to ensure compliance with SRC, U-M, and sponsor guidelines; investigate and resolve issues
Utilize financial knowledge and experience in budget development, forecasting, analyses, reporting, and conveyance of recommendations to PIs, research teams, and colleagues
Assist with preparing monthly faculty effort spreadsheets to track project commitments across time.
Interpret regulations and guidelines to ensure compliance with sponsor, ISR, and university guidelines
Prepare materials for annual sponsor project reports such as Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPR) and other reporting requirements
Other post-award responsibilities including: set-up new sponsored projects, request sub-accounts, prepare and submit various award change requests, complete uniform guidance annual reports, complete budget allocations, prepare for closeout of projects, initiate and manage subcontracts, maintain other support and complete the closeout of sponsored projects.
30% Data Enclave & Use Agreement Management
This position will be the primary contact for the administrative aspects of end user approvals for access to the Survey Research Center Secure Data Enclave (SDE). We currently have a range of individuals with access to data through the SDE. This position will:
Review, approve and troubleshoot overall access to the enclave
Terminate access as needed
Provide SDE user data for project reports
Manage the contractual portions of the SDE and secure approvals from the Office of Research & Sponsored Projects (ORSP) through the unfunded agreement system
This position will also serve as the primary contact for troubleshooting and securing approvals for all additional programmatic data use agreements, material transfer agreements and unfunded agreements.
15% Pre-Award Activities
Duties include:
Preparing and communicating proposal timelines and documents required to project teams and coordinating overall organization of submissions
Meeting with faculty and stakeholders to determine overall proposal needs
Interpreting overall sponsor guidelines for varying sponsors and conveying necessary specifications to faculty
Preparing and developing proposal budgets and first stage budget justifications
Preparing/reviewing/finalizing typically required proposal documents (facilities, biosketches, subaward packages, etc)
Routing proposals through eResearch proposal management system at the University of Michigan ensuring timely submissions
Preparing Just in Time documentation and other sponsored requests.
10% Hiring Activities
This position will manage the student/temporary hiring process for all three programs with assistance from the research administration senior manager as needed. Duties include:
Working with project teams to identify needs and budget availability
Assist with preparing student/temporary job postings and securing internal approvals
Ensuring completion of new hire activities for student/temporary employees (I9 confirmation, timesheet activation, email group maintenance, ensuring access to space and computing needs, etc.)
10% Other Activities
This position will also assist with sponsored research projects and other duties as assigned. Duties include:
Serving as backup for the preparation of biosketches and ensuring publication compliance
Deposit publications for award compliance
Assisting with pilot awards for sponsored research
Managing HSIP / respondent payments
Assisting with project specific conferences and workshops
Assisting with IRB applications and activities
Providing backup to other team members during peak work times
Required Qualifications*
We'd like to hear from you if you have:
Bachelor's degree and 7 years of progressive grant and contract experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to establish project plans, regularly monitor and track progress on work projects, and communicate with project partners
Experience managing federal grants including research performance progress reports (RPPR), eRA Commons, and similar systems
Demonstrated ability to craft/create budgets for proposed research
Strong Microsoft Office skills
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines, and strong attention to detail
Proven analytical problem solver and retain a high sense of ownership and accountability
Able to work independently as well as part of a team
Desired Qualifications*
We are especially interested if you also have:
Familiarity with U-M pre-award systems (eResearch)
Experience with U-M postaward related systems such as FinProd, FinHR, Business Objects, and M-Reports
Experience with unfunded agreements
Work Locations
Work location is expected to be onsite in Ann Arbor with flexibility for hybrid work within our overall Center guidelines.
Underfill Statement
Based on qualifications, this position could be underfilled at the Senior level. For a Senior position, qualifications include a Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of progressive grant and contract experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. The salary for a senior position is $85,000-$98,000.
