Job Information

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility (AWWU)

HOURS OF WORK: 4/10's; Monday - Thursday / Tuesday - Friday; 6:00 am - 4:30 pm / 6:00 am - 5:00 pm

LOCATION: 325 E 94th Court

Participates in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, seven (7) days a week, 24 hours per day.


The industrial electrician troubleshoots and maintains the electrical equipment that supports the treatment, collection, and distribution of water and wastewater. The position requires installation and repair of industrial electrical controls including VFDs (variable frequency drives), distributed control systems, distribution panels, switchgear, turbines, pump motors, valve actuators, soft starts, and motor control centers. This position also requires responding to emergencies in a professional and timely manner. Responsible for the maintenance and construction, which includes power distribution and switching, motor control and integrated sensors for all electrical equipment throughout the utility.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, conducts instrumentation calibration, maintenance, and repair. The position is charged with the integrity of the Utility's plant-floor process instrumentation used for water quality; air quality; chemical manufacturing; process control; and regulatory reporting in an industrial setting. This position is charged with the integrity of instruments used for life-safety, and the protection of Utility property.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Education & Experience

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent and four (4) years of journeyman electrical experience in control system in an industrial plant/facility.

OR

Associates Degree in Electrical/Electronic technology and two (2) years of industrial electrical experience.

License

Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license at the time of hire.

Preference

State of Alaska certification in/license as:

  • Electrical Journeyman's Certificate of Fitness

    • Water Distribution Operator

    • Water Treatment Operator

    • Wastewater Treatment Operator

    • Wastewater Collection Operator

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

As a condition of employment, the person selected must provide a Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 367 Union Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
