Microsoft Corporation Datacenter Engineering Senior Design Manager – EMEA South in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. The Datacenter Engineering Design Manager position will fulfill a Region wide “Design Audit” role for Microsoft’s EMEA South located datacenter campuses, supporting ongoing construction activities. This role will serve as the Regional Design Support Leader to ensure campus design quality and intent are being met, traveling to multiple campuses weekly to support on-site personnel in design challenges. This position will work in partnership with construction, procurement, cost & schedule management to improve project delivery performance.

Responsibilities

The Datacenter Engineering Design Manager will support EMEA South located construction projects by working with project subject matter experts to ensure design challenges are remedied quickly. They will work with Engineer & Architect of Record and Datacenter Engineering Metro Design Managers to help guide these solutions, focusing on safety, quality, schedule and cost.

As part of the regional Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Execution Oversight Team (EOT) team, the key responsibilities are to work cross functionally with other EOT team members to provide oversight on the consistent implementation of the project SLA and functional governance, perform project health analysis against the approved SLAs/scope/execution plan/cost/schedule, assist with the project setup, evaluate the site resource effectiveness, conduct spot audits, assist with onboarding and training of the site-based team. Team will be dedicated to this scope and will not be assigned to specific projects or other functional/regional activities. The project reviews and assessment will be as per the EOT roadmap and/or managed by exception should a critical priority is raised within the region. Team will be based in hub location and will travel together to the site as per the roadmap and business critical priorities.

Topics for Design challenges will be related to Datacenter building, power, cooling, telecom, and controls infrastructure. This person, while not the project Subject matter expert, must be suitably versed in datacenter engineering and architectural design to be able to bring technical solutions to the table, regardless of discipline. Construction best practices knowledge will also be required.

Core Responsibilities and competencies:

  • Coordinate with project architects, engineers and designers and deliver projects aligned with the defined scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Coordinate with construction, procurement, cost & schedule teams to ensure compliance with design specifications.

  • Facilitate timely response and enable seamless project execution.

  • Possess a high level of proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design and construction best practices.

  • Able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.

  • Be a person of integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and leadership skills.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field.

  • Technical understanding of mission critical environments.

Required Experience:

  • Significant experience in engineering, equipment and/or construction for mission critical or high-tech industry.

  • Experience as project or team manager.

  • Ability to lead teams of architects and engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.
