Job Summary

The Assistant Residence Hall Security Manager coordinates and supervises residence hall security evening shift operations to include both student staff and police cadets. They monitor activities during evening/night shifts, respond to requests for assistance; and direct staff engaged in campus and special event security.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees residence hall security evening/night shift operations, including the staff assignments and supervision of more than 50 hall monitors, 16 cadets, 3 student supervisors, and a shift dispatcher.

  • Recruits, appoints, trains, and evaluates residence hall security staff. Works closely with student shift supervisors and scheduling coordinators to provide support and direction.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of the cadet training curriculum and police cadet training.

  • Collaborates with campus partners to staff event security, including but not limited to; move in, commencement, residence hall events and requests for additional security details.

  • Enforces the University’s security standards and policies while protecting the property and safety of campus residents.

  • Monitors radio communications to relay pertinent information to/from Residence Hall Security, Residence Life and UMass police personnel.

  • Collaborates with police, fire and other authorities in reporting problems affecting the safety and security of persons and property, and prepares coinciding reports.

  • Responds to calls for aid from monitors and supervisors and assists with confrontational and emergency situations at and around the security location in the residence halls.

  • Acts as liaison to the University police and Residence Life in the evening/night hours.

  • Assists University Police by viewing and operating central security surveillance systems.

  • Assists with the evaluation of the effectiveness of residence hall security operations by recommending program enhancements, policy changes and procedure improvements in response to changes in security needs.

  • Recommends relevant educational opportunities to University staff and residence hall students.

  • Assists the Residence Hall Security Manager with various monthly and annual reports.

  • Maintains and supports the residence hall security program database.

  • Assures issued Crime Advisories and Crime Alerts are shared with all student security and Police Cadet Personnel in a timely manner, including the prompt posting of Alerts on the main door of all residence halls.

  • Installs, configures, maintains and trouble shoots security cameras and associated electronic equipment.

  • Maintains technical proficiency and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications, and training opportunities.

  • Operates a department vehicle as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Associate’s degree.

  • Two (2) years’ experience, with at least one year experience supervising, which may include student staff.

  • Knowledge and experience managing or supporting electronic and security equipment.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and with individuals and groups who hold a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated computer skills utilizing a typical suite of Microsoft Office.

  • Successful completion of a background investigation; no conviction record of a felony.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment activity.

  • Must be able to lift or move equipment or materials weighing up to 50lbs.

  • Requires occasional off-shift and additional hours for high profile security events and camera problem resolution. Provides occasional on-call support for critical video camera problems.

Work Schedule

  • Standard work schedule: Tuesday & Wednesday 3:00pm – 11:00pm, Thursday – Saturday 7:00pm – 3:00am.
