Position Summary

The primary emphasis of this position is to improve safety performance for a designated operational area. This position provides leadership in the development, implementation and administration of plant safety policies that are in compliance with and support Xcel Energy and the business area's safety programs and policies. This position must be able to work with plant personnel and safety consultants to assist in the creation of plant specific approaches to improve safety while complying with all regulations. The position works with the corporate safety organization and other company safety groups on common safety issues and projects.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision and direction of the safety consultants in a geographic region. Provides direction, leadership and management of safety activities through management of labor and operating budget including decision-making regarding program priorities and forecasting future needs.

  • Provides leadership to safety consultants and plants in the development, implementation and administration of safety policies and safety training programs to meet employee and company needs. Serves as liaison to resolve safety issues and to promote accident prevention and a safe work environment.

  • Is responsible for communicating with safety management, plant management, and safety consultants to insure safety regulatory requirements are understood and program compliance is achieved. Works to spread best practices and lessons learned throughout the plants. Communicates information regarding proposed regulations, policies, goal setting, accident investigations, and accident trends.

  • Understands issues associated with power plant safety, power plant operations, and power plant working environments. Works with safety consultants and plant personnel to design and implement initiatives to improve safety performance, reduce workforce injuries and illnesses and to maximize regulatory compliance.

  • In consultation with management, lead the development, implementation and evaluation of safety programs that meet business needs and regulatory requirements. Monitor content of programs to ensure they remain up-to-date and are in compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and interpret federal, state, and local safety and health rules and other regulations. Recommend, author and communicate training, safety and health guidelines based on those rules and regulations.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS/BA in Safety, Health or related science or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge plus six to eight years field safety experience.

  • Minimum of five years' experience developing and administering safety programs, which includes experience managing or leading project and/or process improvement teams.

  • CSP or CUSA Safety certification preferred.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety and health regulations as they pertain to the electric industry.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning theory.

  • Demonstrated skills in technical writing, verbal communication and negotiation.

Preferred

  • Experience working with power plants or power generation.

  • Collective bargaining and union experience

  • Experience or knowledge with Human Organizational Performance safety principles

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $92,300.00 to $130,566.66 per year
