Position Description:

Provides advanced veterinary technical skills with respect to the care, management, treatment, and documentation of care provided to animals used in the teaching and research program of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. This job would involve instruction of veterinary students in clinical and professional skills laboratories involving multiple species including physical examination, surgical, medical, handling, and communication situations. Incumbent must be willing and able to follow-up on all animal health issues on a daily basis. This will at times require weekend and holiday care of sick animals. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

Major/Essential Functions:

This position would aid TTU clinical faculty delivering instruction for the clinical year program at Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. The clinical year program is the 4th and final year of veterinary student instruction and is delivered in both on-campus and at off-campus partnering veterinary practices. This position will primarily assist faculty who are delivering instruction off-campus, at our Instructional Center in Hereford TX. The position will have responsibility of inventory management of ambulatory vehicles, and Instructional Center TTU SVM inventory at the practice. This person may also aid in daily instruction of veterinary students in veterinary work provided at the center including physical examination, diagnostics and medical treatments, anesthesia, and surgery. The technician would be based out of Amarillo and may accompany clinical faculty to the Instructional Center in Hereford, on an as needed basis.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Knowledge and proficiency of basic veterinary technical skills

  • Use of electronic medical record systems and practice management software

  • Performance of diagnostic testing and acquisition of diagnostic imaging

  • Recognition of illness and provision of general nursing care

  • Administration of medications

  • Assisting in inventory management and purchasing of associated veterinary equipment and supplies

  • Maintenance of veterinary equipment including instrument sterilization

  • Teaching and assessment of veterinary students within a clinical setting

  • Ability to safely handle large animal veterinary patients.

  • Ability to travel, working with clinical program veterinarians at off-campus locations.

  • No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust

  • Ability to routinely lift 50 pounds or less independently.

  • Ability to routinely work outdoors in a variety of conditions.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

At times, this will require after-hours, weekend, and holiday care of sick animals. As TTU SVM does not have a teaching hospital, duties will be primarily within the pre-clinical program.

The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM) was established in 2018 as the second veterinary school program in the State of Texas. The mission of the school is to train veterinarians that will return to practice in rural and regional communities of Texas and New Mexico. The school is located in Amarillo, Texas, with the main campus being located adjacent to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and a large animal facility (Mariposa Station) conveniently located 3 miles away from the main campus.
