St. Luke’s highly dedicated staff serves the Behavioral Health needs throughout our community in our in-patient units which provide structure in a secure setting. St. Luke’s interdisciplinary treatment team consists of experienced mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, nurses, case managers, behavioral health technicians and activity therapists.

The Behavioral Health Technician Trainee’s primary responsibility is to learn how to assist in the delivery of patient care for the patients admitted to the inpatient behavioral Health services. The training program is developed to allow the trainee to actively participate and support the primary clinical nursing staff, and other clinical team members such as case managers and providers. Upon completion, the Behavioral Health Technician Trainee is a professional member of the interdisciplinary team and consistently demonstrates and promotes the values of the organization. Throughout the training period, the Behavioral Health Technician Trainee will work with and receive supervision from the Behavioral Health Education Specialists, the RN BHT preceptors. They will learn how to participate in data collection, planning and implementation of patient care as well as acting in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

TRAINING / WORK SCHEDULE:

The BHT Academy is a 4-Week Program, Monday - Friday, Full-Time Days Shift, 8:00am- 4:30pm, and takes place at the St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown.

Upon successful completion the candidate will be placed into a Behavioral Health Tech role in Adult or Older Adult Behavioral Health. Placement will be according to campus and unit needs (with your preferences being strongly considered). Opportunities will primarily be available for evening shift and night shift.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for being an engaged student during classroom and didactic education.

  • Actively learns and participates in learning of performing the following tasks as assigned:

  • ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) – personal hygiene, nutrition, elimination.

  • Performs or supports the patient while performing necessary physical care to ensure Activities of Daily Living are maintained – personal hygiene, nutrition, elimination, ambulation or physical mobility.

  • Vocabulary of medical terminology and abbreviations

  • Patient education and safety Other applicable training

  • Vital signs Intake and output measurements EKGs, Glucometry, Phlebotomy, Specimen collection

  • Documentation for all assigned responsibilities

  • Responsible for actively participating during shadowing and precepting portion of training program to include learning the following tasks, activities, or responsibilities:

  • Understanding the role of the BHT as a member of the healthcare team.

  • Monitors the therapeutic environment by performing safety checks and monitors patient status by performing patient observations and continual rounding.

  • Environmental Safety Practices, Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean and orderly environment

  • Therapeutic Communication / Maintaining and/or improving therapeutic milieu.

  • Violence Prevention – De-escalation (MOAB training) Training in the use of physical restraint / seclusion Emergency Response Therapeutic / Recreational Activities

  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

  • Upon completion of training program, Behavioral Health Technician Trainee participates in testing and validation of skills learned to move into a role within network.

EDUCATION:

High School Graduate/GED required. BA/BS in human services field, or current student in BA/BS/Nursing School preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Customer service experience is strongly preferred; BLS/CPR: current or within 60 days of hire; through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Must have ability to sit for 2 total hours per day, and up to 1 total consecutive hour. Must be able to stand for 8 total hours per day and up to 2 total consecutive hours. Must be able to walk 6 total hours per day and up to 10 total consecutive minutes. Must have the ability to frequently use fingers/hands for fingering and handling. Must have the ability to use upper extremities for frequent pushing of objects up to 10 pounds and occasional pushing of objects up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, stretcher and/or bed. Must have the ability for frequent stooping and bending. Must have the ability for frequent reaching above shoulder level. Must have the ability for touching as it relates to feeling objects by touching with the skin, particularly that of fingertips. Must have the ability for hearing as it relates to normal conversation, high frequency and low frequency hearing sounds. Must have the ability for seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, color vision and peripheral vision.
