General Job Description

The Network Engineer will be a member of a dynamic and high-functioning team and will be responsible for MPR's network. This individual will design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot data and IP-based communication networks, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and other communications systems. The Network Engineer will research and recommend technical upgrades (hardware and software) to the current infrastructure and lead the implementation projects. This individual will work closely with the IT team to provide cross-functional maintenance and support on other technologies, including voice, data, and video systems. This position has strong opportunities to enhance skills by participating in upgrades of existing systems as well as researching, designing, and implementing new systems and services. Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support emergencies and MPR business goals. This is a full-time, exempt position in MPR's Alexandria, VA office, reporting to the Information Security Manager.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and support MPR's multi-office and cloud network infrastructure.

  • Design and implement network security best practices using a combination of technologies such as VPNs/encryption, firewalls, secure proxies, IDS/IPS, and secure network design methodology.

  • Support and troubleshoot next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) and network access control (NAC).

  • Troubleshoot and proactively resolve network anomalies/outages, including low throughput, packet loss, errors, latency, delay, and jitter, and conduct root cause analysis.

  • Recommend changes/improvements to the network for future growth and expansion

  • Manage and lead network-related projects.

  • Collaborate with IT Operations and Cybersecurity Team to design and implement secure network architecture aligned with NIST standards.

  • Proactively monitor the health of network hardware using common network monitoring tools.

  • Create, update, and maintain network diagrams and documentation.

  • Work with outside vendors and carriers to maintain and troubleshoot existing services and implement new services.

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of business continuity processes and procedures.

  • Provide network and network security consultation to MPR clients.

  • Rotational on-call support for network and cybersecurity issues is required.

  • Occasional travel to site offices for system maintenance may be required.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

    Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or IT-related technical discipline and four (4) years experience, or a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in network systems administration and support may be substituted.

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certifications are required.

  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (Enterprise/Security) preferred.

  • Security+ certification a plus.

    Skills

  • Expert knowledge of network infrastructure design concepts and best practices.

  • Expert knowledge in routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP) across WAN and distributed datacenter.

  • Expert knowledge of troubleshooting layer 2 and layer 3 network issues.

  • Advanced knowledge of NGFWs such as Cisco, Palo Alto, and Fortinet.

  • Advanced knowledge of network performance monitoring software.

  • Advanced knowledge of wireless technologies.

  • Intermediate knowledge of the identity-based network access control and policy enforcement system.

  • Knowledge of cloud network infrastructure design, including Azure and AWS.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across functional teams.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

  • Motivated to expand skills and knowledge, as well as tackle new problems and take on new responsibilities.

  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies while multitasking.

  • Strong time management and customer service skills.

  • Persistent, questioning attitude and ability to accept that in others.
