Overview

Under limited supervision, the Animal Resources Supervisor is responsible for supporting the Animal Resources Manager in the coordination and management of the day to day operations in animal husbandry. The AR Supervisor provides oversight for lower level employees to include training, performance management and onboarding. The AR supervisor will perform facility inspections and assist in all areas of animal husbandry on an as needed basis, and perform all related duties and tasks as required or assigned.

The AR Supervisor will also be responsible for responding to environmental monitoring systems in the animal facility, procurement of feed and bedding materials, maintaining detailed records, collection of animal census data and other duties as assigned to facilitate quality research.

Qualifications

A High School Diploma and a minimum of five (5) years experience in an animal care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience is required.

Must have a demonstrated ability to successfully perform a variety of routine laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment and instruments. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of animal care, animal husbandry requirements, methods, and techniques in addition to knowledge of pre-op and post-op procedures. Must have demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the handling and care of animals. Must have the ability to establish and maintain veterinary/animal husbandry records and to order supplies, equipment as well as perform inventory control. Must have knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures. Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice requirements for animal facilities is desired.

Requires strong professional-level written and verbal communication skills, excellent problem-solving and decision making skills, excellent judgement the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Must have the ability to lead and train staff. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, as well as the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and other heavy equipment, pushing, bending, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, outdoor work, working in extremes temperature and humidity. Must be able to wear a respirator and protective clothing or equipment. Must be able to work with various large and small animals, including, but not limited to: rodents, ferrets, rabbits, dogs, minipigs, and nonhuman primates.

A Post-offer physical and background check/security clearance are required. Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB) is required.

Must be available to work scheduled shifts, including weekends and holidays.Personnel are required to maintain an appropriate TB screen as indicated and directed by LBRI. Work environment may require vaccinations/immunizations as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in laboratory and vivarium/animal housing environments. Will frequently stand, sit, walk, kneel, crawl, reach/work overhead, frequently lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive and perform desk-based computer tasks. Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator. Will work in close proximity to research animals and may be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.
