CLEANER

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs routine building cleaning and outside ground maintenance tasks. Does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is work requiring effective performance of building cleaning & grounds keeping. Cleaning tasks are performed according to an established procedure and involves some heavy work requiring physical strength and ability. This position is distinguished from that of a Custodian by the lighter nature of the work performed and snow removal is required. The work is performed under the supervision of a Maintenance Superintendent. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

  • Sweeps and mops floors, stairs and halls

  • Cleans offices and vacuums carpets

  • Dusts, cleans and polishes chairs, tables, desks and other furniture

  • Performs general cleaning of bathroom floors, sinks, walls, toilets and mirrors, replenishes soap and paper towel dispensers and replaces paper products if necessary

  • Empties wastepaper baskets and disposes of rubbish

  • Maintains the grounds by picking up trash and debris

  • Mulch, trims shrubs, rakes leaves,removing ice & snow, and performs a variety of other grounds keeping tasks as assigned

  • Performs related work as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently

  • Ability to read and write simple information

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions

  • Ability to perform cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks

  • Willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks

  • Ability to get along well with others

  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License is required

HOURS 40 PER WEEK (M-F)

SHIFT A – (8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.)
