Anesthesia technicians attend to the practical details of preparing and maintaining anesthesia supplies and equipment, freeing the anesthesia care team to focus on the patient. Anesthesia Technicians perform duties under the direct supervision of a Licensed Anesthesia Provider and/or Registered Nurse (RN). The Anesthesia Technician adheres to AMC policies, standards and practice as well as departmental policy for the Anesthesia Department and assists with Anesthesia Delivery Systems, equipment, instrumentation and technology, room turnover, Blood Salvage and Infection Control.

Essential Functions:

Equipment Care:

  • Demonstrates understanding of the anesthesia machine's normal operation and troubleshooting procedures.

  • Performs routine cleaning and basic maintenance on all subsystems, including calibration and testing.

  • Cleans, maintains, and troubleshoots other equipment used in the operating room, including infusion systems, humidification systems, cardiac and other monitors used to track the patient's condition during a procedure.

Material Management:

  • Stocks operating rooms with materials appropriate for given procedures.

  • Monitors the content of gas cylinders, replacing them as necessary.

  • Ensures safe storage of anesthesia gases.

  • Secures medications upon delivery.

  • Inspects packaging of disposable items for intact packaging and sterility.

  • Sets up basic equipment necessary to support the anesthesia care team for patient care, including IV lines, central lines, monitors, intubation visualization equipment, pressure infusion and other infusion devices such as the cell saver.

Provider Support:

  • Supports the anesthesia provider during surgery by helping monitor the test equipment.

Patient Safety:

  • Supports a system that encourages the identification and analysis of errors and near misses in the context of a safety culture.

  • Participates in departmental safety inspections to assure compliance with hospital safety standards as assigned.

  • Is aware of and compliant with all hospital and regulatory agency safety goals and objectives as well as limitations of unlicensed assistive care.
