Cleveland Clinic RN Specialist Lactation NE in Akron, Ohio

The Lactation Specialist uses expertise to guide and/or provide high quality interventions for the breastfeeding dyad. All breastfeeding mothers require education and support in the promotion of the breastfeeding experience.

  • Models appropriate interventions for support of breastfeeding.

  • Makes breastfeeding rounds to assess patient progress with breastfeeding throughout the medical center for both the term and preterm breastfeeding patient population.

  • Provides direct patient interventions for support of breastfeeding couplets in complex situations.

  • Consults with nursing staff and/or physicians in planning interventions that enhance the continuity of care and consistency of information for the breastfeeding patient.

  • Educates patient/families about breastfeeding.

  • Evaluates products and educates staff and patients on the various products used to assist with breastfeeding, (i.e., breast pumps, breast shells, etc.)

  • Provides evidence based information on breastfeeding to both professionals and patients as needed.

  • Acts as a clinical resource for breastfeeding related questions/concerns throughout the medical center.

  • Collaborates with nursing staff, Director, Clinical Specialist and physicians to develop and/or revise breastfeeding policy and procedure.

  • Acts as a clinical resource to families in the community for breastfeeding related concerns.

  • Evaluates and communicates to staff relevant research findings on an ongoing basis.

  • Investigates research opportunities. Attends meetings, workshops and seminars to facilitate professional self-growth.

  • Maintains appropriate certification in Lactation.

  • Collaborates with other community organizations in the goal of breastfeeding promotion and support.

  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.

  • Other duties as assigned

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider.

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within 6 months of hire.

  • Will consider candidates with Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification or equivalent upon hire, with successful completion of IBCLC certification within 18 months of hire.

Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.

Work Experience:

  • Two years experience in working with breastfeeding families.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

  • May requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
