Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the Senior Material Handler will report to the Manufacturing Supervisor of the Fabrication department. The Senior Material Handler is responsible for various products and materials, including the receiving and handling of raw materials within the Powell Canada manufacturing process. This position assists Painters, Machine Operators, Welders, Material Handlers, and Lead persons.

Essential Responsibilities

• Loading, unloading and unpacking all raw materials and related merchandise both indoors and outdoors.

• Organizing, stacking and banding pallets for removal, communicating to lead for pick up.

• Communicate with Shipper/Receivers and Supply Chain for product returns.

• Inspection of all raw materials received in accordance with CSA W59 and Powell specifications.

• Marking of all raw materials with applicable heat number, project number and/or inventory numbers.

• Deliver material to appropriate location or placing material on appropriate shelve, rack or bin.

• Delivery of material to machine operators, welder or work groups according to schedule.

• Maintain internal record-keeping system including MTR’s and packing slips.

• Disposal of all packing/strapping material.

• Parts pick up and delivery.

• Assisting machine operators in loading or unloading required material to and from their machines.

• Assist with daily and weekly preventative maintenance of the metal working machinery.

• Assisting Brake Operators with heavy or awkward parts during braking operations.

• Maintaining and keeping organized multiple scrap bin locations located around manufacturing facility.

• Dumping of shop scrap bin hoppers into larger out door containers.

• Assemble containers and crates.

• Pack goods to be shipped.

• Assist Lead Hands with training and mentoring other employees.

• Promotes a safety culture as well as attends all safety meetings.

• Ensure quality by following standard work/process instructions and identifying any potential risks to product quality.

• Ensure that work areas remain clean and well organized.

• Other duties as required.

Job Requirements/Core Competencies

• Ability to read a tape measure (including conversions from fraction to decimal and conversely from decimal to fraction and metric to imperial).

• Knowledge of raw materials and production processes.

• Ability to properly identify material shapes (i.e. i-beam, wide flange beam, channel, HSS, pipe, round tube, etc.).

• Ability to determine faults in material which exceed tolerances while receiving.

• Knowledge and ability to use general hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and vise grips etc.

• Conscientious, thorough, accurate, and reliable when performing and completing job tasks.

• Adheres to Powell’s set of core values and beliefs during both good and bad times.

• Demonstrates a sense of urgency and a “can-do” attitude by collaborating with others to solve problems and drive results.

• Approaches work consistently and utilize methods to complete and monitor tasks to meet deadlines.

• Ability to adapt to new ideas, technology, processes and product changes.

• Effectively diagnoses problems and influences proper action to resolve them.

• Able to work effectively within your team and around other departments and their activities.

• Ability to learn and adhere to all manufacturing policies and practices to ensure adherence to ISO requirements.

• Must have a basic command of the English language, both written and verbal.

Qualifications

• Minimum education level of a High School Diploma is required.

• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working in metal fabrication is an asset.

• CWB Level 1 welding inspector certification is considered a strong asset.

• Forklift and overhead crane operator’s ticket is considered an asset.

• Bobcat experience is an asset.

• Basic to intermediate level computer skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook).

• Must possess a current Alberta driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract.

• Safety certifications are an asset in this position.
