Job Summary

The Therapeutic Recreation Manager works to plan, develop and organize programs in accordance with Federal, State, and Local standards, which are designed to meet the interests and the physical, mental, and psycho-social well-being of each patient/resident in the sub-acute and long-term care settings and in accordance with their person-centered assessments. Coordinates and manages day to day operations of the Therapeutic Recreation Department, participates in interdepartmental meetings, manages staff productivity and performance.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, supervises and schedules the daily activities of Therapeutic Recreation staff and volunteers.

  • Completes and approves schedules in a timely and efficient manner. Handles vacation requests and callouts.

  • Maintains and submits monthly calendar of activities. Ensures calendar of activities is communicated through postings for staff, residents, and volunteers.

  • Ensures the Therapeutic Recreation program provides services that are suited to the needs, abilities and interests of residents as mandated by accrediting agencies.

  • Ensures activities are provided in individual and group settings for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory residents.

  • Ensures the Therapeutic Recreation program provides a variety of activities, both in and out of the facility.

  • Responsible for training and orientation for department staff and participates in the orientation of facility staff, volunteers, and/or students.

  • Ensures assessments and care plans are person-centered and are completed by staff within 14 days.

  • Reviews with each resident his/her participation in programs and revise care plan as needed.

  • Attends all interdisciplinary team meetings or schedule staff to attend.

  • Assists in the selection of safe and adequate space, equipment and supplies for the department’s programs. Orders appropriate supplies as needed according to annual budget.

  • Participates in the facility’s quality program.

  • Performs duties, and ensures department staff performs duties, in accordance with MVHS and RNC policies and Procedures.

  • Interprets, and applies applicable policies and regulations, ensuring all activities are in compliance. Ensures staff is knowledgeable of policies and regulations, including Resident Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Participates in the creation of new document tools to assist with the development and assessment of department activities. Objectively monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the activities program to meet the needs, abilities, and interests of residents.

  • Evaluates the utilization of resources and adheres to annual budget. Makes recommendations for new equipment.

  • Provides reports on Therapeutic Recreation programs and events. Keeps leadership informed of issues, concerns and progress towards goals.

  • Participates in Resident Council meetings and provides support services to such council.

  • In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, makes decisions or recommendations related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in recreation with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited institution.

  • 3 years of experience in Therapeutic Recreation or working with people with disabilities in a Long Term Care or Rehab setting.

  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience.

  • Experience working with patients/residents in a Long Term Care or Rehabilitation setting
