Urbandale Community School District Special Education Associate/Job Coach (full-time) - UHS in Urbandale, Iowa

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION : The purpose of the Job Coach/Special Education Associate position is to provide individual or small group assistance to persons with disabilities to develop employability skills, including seeking and maintaining employment, and providing support on the job site.

DETAILS:

7.5 hrs/day

Beginning Hourly Rate: $16.79/hr

This position is full-time and is eligible for health insurance benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :

  1. Ability to work with persons with disabilities on a daily basis.

  2. Able to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.

  3. Knowledge of IEP procedures, physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs.

  4. Knowledge of how to use assistive equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers.

  5. Ability to communicate effectively, demonstrate patience, and model appropriate behaviors to persons with disabilities.

  6. Work with individuals towards individualized education plan goals.

  7. Ability to explain and participate in daily activities.

  8. Must be able to interact in a positive manner with students, faculty, parents, and other staff members.

  9. Ability to assist students with self-care needs which may include transfers.

    Education :

  10. High School Diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience :

  11. Experience working with children/adults with disabilities.

    Equipment :

  12. Office equipment such as cell phone, multi-line phone system, fax machines, copiers, and computers.

  13. Assistive equipments such as wheelchairs and walkers.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  14. Accompany students with disabilities throughout the school day and on community-based trips to work experiences focused on living, learning, and working.

  15. Provide instructional assistance to students to build essential skills to obtain and maintain employability.

  16. Provide assistance at job site.

  17. Administer physical and/or occupational therapy programs, where appropriate, as trained by teacher and/or education agency therapists.

  18. Assist with mobility needs such as repositioning, transferring, loading and unloading onto the bus, and supervising students throughout the school and/or job site.

  19. Assist students with self-care needs when appropriate.

  20. Attend professional training as necessary for the position.

  21. Maintain a reliable attendance record.

  22. Maintain confidentiality.

  23. Assist with programs the teacher has created for educational purposes.

  24. Report incidents of an unusual nature to teacher and principal.

  25. Perform clerical tasks such as making phone calls, filing, and maintaining student records.

  26. Maintain work areas in a neat and orderly manner.

  27. Knowledge of emergency procedures for building and classroom.

  28. Be able to transport students in school vehicle.

  29. Other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISION OF OTHERS :

  • None

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Satisfactory health as certified by a competent medical authority upon hire.

  • Ability to transfer students as needed.

  • Repetitious bending, lifting, and hand movement.

  • Ability to work while standing, moving and/or walking.

  • Drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free while working.

  • Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Majority of work is performed in an office or school setting.

  • Occasional meetings outside the school day.

  • Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials and emergency situations.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • At-will employee.

  • Letter of Assignment.

  • Per Board Policies and administrative guidelines.

  • Performance evaluated annually.
