Responsibilities

Medical Director – Cardiovascular Service Line

This job is accountable for the strategic development, management and related clinical operations/services of the Cardiovascular Service Line (CVSL) across Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH). An incumbent performs these functions with an administrative dyad partner (Executive Division Director) and will report to VMFH’s Divisional SVP Integration, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the President of the Franciscan Medical Group. Work also includes leading and representing the CVSL at the CommonSpirit Health national level.

The purpose of the service line is to create and maintain seamless integration of services across VMFH ensuring that patients have easy access to patient-centered, high quality and safe care. By design, this includes integration between acute medical centers and hospitals, employed providers and clinics, and independent provider groups.

Clinical time allocation: Incumbent will work a minimum 0.1 FTE as a clinician and subject to an active provider contract.

Accountable for division-wide aspects of CVSL physician development and management of patient-centered quality initiatives with CVSL Executive Director; and, in conjunction with the SVP Chief Medical Officer for clinical practice-related matters and the SVP Chief Strategy Officer, is responsible for the strategic growth and development of the CVSL congruent with VMFH’s vision to operate a high performing, high value system of care, including employed providers and independent providers.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

  • Develops an annual strategic business plan that supports attainment of a world-class cardiovascular institute; defines and elaborates the strategic goals of the CVSL, identifies opportunities for growth and development; ensures plans functionally align with VMFH’s strategic objectives, budget and available capital and that established plans achieve identified goals for the service line; provides required CVSL performance reports to senior leadership on an annual and periodic basis.

  • Identifies and leads CVSL quality improvement initiatives, including integration of employed and independent physician groups with CVSL protocols and other quality improvement plans.

  • Provides clinical leadership in the development and implementation of the CVSL strategic growth plan and annual budgets (e.g. operating, supply, staffing, capital, etc.) and makes budget-related recommendations to the Cardiovascular Leadership Council (CVLC) or its equivalent.

  • Provides executive-level clinical leadership in the development of “Center of Excellence” programs within the CVSL that are designed to distinguish the service line from other programs in the region and aspire to national best practices.

  • Works (in partnership with Executive Division Director and FMG leadership) to build an integrated culture across medical staff, hospitals, departments and clinics to advance access, quality, safety, patient experience, provider satisfaction and to build/strengthen strategic position.

  • Provides support, clinical expertise and collaboration with providers, and acute and ambulatory leaders to improve the patient experience for those patients in the care of the CVSL based on opportunities identified through survey data, provider feedback, and other sources.

  • Advises and assists with engagement initiatives to enhance and improve staff and provider engagement consistent with organizational goals.

  • Serves as CVLC Chair and co-leader of the Service Line Strategic Leadership Committee (governance committee); participates as an active member of all CVSL subcommittees and other committees as directed by Executive Division Director and senior leadership.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Division Director, identifies regional and national clinical partners to further the clinical expertise, quality and outcomes delivered across the broader geographies serviced by VMFH; ensures linkage with CommonSpirit Health’s national strategies in these areas.

  • Maintains strong partnership with FMG leaders to drive accountability for administering clinical quality and delivery of exceptional patient-centric care; participates in evaluating clinic provider performance, productivity, and delivery on established goals and CVSL imperatives; sustains processes to ensure independent providers maintain skills necessary to perform at the quality/patient safety level expected for the entire service line.

  • Determines (in collaboration with Executive Division Director and FMG leadership) provider resource requirements and recruitment strategy; participates in efforts to hire physicians with unique skills in new program development; collaborates with Executive Division Director to identify, develop and recruit independent providers onto the medical staff.

  • Assists CVSL in establishing partnerships with FMG Primary Care and independent primary care groups and hospitals to expand VMFH’s primary and secondary service areas for cardiovascular care.

  • Conducts, on a regular basis, chart and case reviews under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (or designee) to evaluate the practice patterns of members where there is a reasonable concern for complying with standards of care.

  • Under the direction of Medical Staff Leadership and in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer (or designee), interacts with providers who fail to comply with the provisions of the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and other related documents and manuals including adherence by department physicians to on-call responsibilities.

  • Assists in the design, implementation, maintenance and coordination of comprehensive credentialing, quality assurance, risk management and utilization review programs and initiates the development of performance improvement/clinical effectiveness projects to enhance the quality of clinical services in the Department and ensure support is available and delivered to individual physicians to improve their quality of care.

  • Participates in the development, evaluation and revision of the CVLS clinical policies and procedures on a regular basis to assure the service line meets qualifications of state and federal laws, The Joint Commission, and applicable licensing requirements regarding services.

  • Advises and assists hospitals and clinics with administrative projects including but not limited to, investigating trends in home health practices, access to care, quality of care, and community relations; participates in the development, presentation and goal setting for improvements.

  • Develops strong working relationships with ambulatory and hospital stakeholders to ensure processes support the medical, physical, and psychosocial needs of patients at each touch point of the healthcare continuum.

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Medical Degree

  • Board Certification in Cardiology, Vascular Surgery or Cardiothoracic Surgery (with ten years of specialty practice experience preferred),

  • A current, unrestricted license, to practice medicine in the state of Washington and collaborative work experience in a large, matrixed and complex health system.

  • Must be able to be contracted and credentialed by third party payers including all state and federal programs.

  • Five years of senior medical group management and/or management/leadership experience is preferred.

  • Service line integration and program building experience

  • MBA/MHA preferred

Pay Range

$336.54 - $432.69 /hour
